Knitting Stitches – Eyelet Ribbon

In the background, I am still quietly knitting the squares for my knitted patchwork blanket of many stitches. Not sure why I have chosen this year for big crafting projects. I think it chose me. Sometimes, in the depths of the night, I do wonder why knitted pot holders or a quilted cushion hadn’t grabbed me as a good idea. Especially as I’m the sort of person who enjoys the idea stage more than the finishing. I have so many ideas buzzing around in my head, waiting to be released. No good having the ideas if I never finish anything. So I’m concentrating on the idea of seeing the finished item.

Long winded way of saying “Here’s my next square!” I preferred this one on paper. In all fairness, I don’t think the colour was the best choice.

(No idea why I am choosing to photograph my squares with stones.)

This is a really easy stitch. Very repetitive and a good introduction to yarn overs and knitting together for anyone wanting something more interesting than garter or stocking stitch. I can imagine a couple of repeats of this being used for a hem or sleeve cuff. Maybe a pretty ribbon weaving through the holes. It would work great at the top of a bag, with a ribbon to gather the top together. A gift bag maybe.

I am finding that a lot of these stitches are best in small doses. Definitely a case of less is more. I have a lovely one on my needles at the moment, which I’ll share with you soon.

Eyelet Ribbon square

Cast on 41 stitches.

Abbreviation: P (purl), K (Knit), Yo ( yarn over), K2tog (knit 2 stitches together), P2tog (purl 2 stitches together), psso (pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch), s1s (slip one stitch)

repeat the stitches between the pair of *s until the end of the row or the last few stitches.

Row 1 and 3: Knit

Row 2 and 4: Purl

Row 5: *K2tog, Yo* K1

Row 6: Knit

I repeated these 6 rows 10 times.

If you are looking for more stitches, go and look at Val‘s knitted coral stitch square. I’m adding it to my list of stitches to try.

Anyone else knitting a patchwork square blanket? I’d love to know which stitches you like doing.

  1. Actually I quite like the colour :0)
Now you’ve introduced the idea I can see ribbons threaded through this one…actually the stones are interesting to look at..there is something about stones, shells and fossils.
You have a creative imagination charging along I’d say…which is good..I know what you mean about the discipline to finish a project off before something else takes over though…hard isn’t it… 😀 😀 😀

    1. I bought the wool originally to knit jumpers for the children, which looked lovely. I think when I put this square in the pile with the others, it jarred. Not sure if it is the colour, the colour and fussy stitch or the stitch that looks out of place. Maybe I’m being fussy. I’ll make a feature out of it. 😀

Totally agree with you about the stones, shells and fossils. Doing a lot of geology and star gazing with the children at the moment, accompanied by all the mind boggling concepts that accompany it. 😯 Probably does explain why I’m reaching for the stones to add interest to my knitted squares.

And yes, keeping myself focused on seeing a crafting project through to the end is challenging.

  2. Not kniting at the moment, but finding this very inspiring! Why did you choose to photograph it with the stones? Because you have an eye for what’s pretty. I liked it.

    1. Thanks, Jodi. I hope the stones do add something. I find them fascinating. I suspect they will occassionally creep into my knitting photos again!

  3. I am really enjoying your long term projects as an outsider – and you seem to be steaming through them! I like the idea of this stitch around a sleeve or at the top of a bag – seems a good idea to try. I’m off to look at Val’s square – would love to join you in a blanket but I am definitely in a mood to finish off a few of the many things I have on my needles already – so I’ll just keep watching yours! 😛

    1. The knitted blanket is a bit of a hybrid. It is one project, but as I’m changing stitches and colour, it feels more like lots of smaller projects. I’m with you. I love seeing other people’s projects. Good luck with your projects.
