I’m joining in with Ginny’s Yarn Along today. A book and a knit. I prefer mine taken in front of the log fire.
After finishing my very first shawl and gifting it to my sister, I barely put the needles down before I cast one on for me. For me! This second shawl is almost finished. Just the border and blocking to go. The yarn is so soft that I cannot wait to try it out.
I’m struggling with metal needles again. There was a small accident with my new wooden needles, where someone, with small feet, trod on my knitting bag and the snap could be heard in the next room. I shouldn’t have left the bag on the floor. I couldn’t be angry, when the owner of the small feet confessed straight away. So its back to slippy needles, which makes me appreciate the difference that the wooden ones made. I’ll get another pair next time I’m in town. Too late for this shawl.
Book wise, I finished The Help, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I miss the characters, but I was ready to close it for the last time. For absolute contrast, I’m reading Bad Science, which sometimes makes me want to stamp my feet and disagree. Other times it makes me think. Hmm. On second thoughts, maybe it’s not so much of a contrast!
I loved reading your comments on our weather ordering calendar (patent pending). I was totally out voted. Almost everyone wants snow right now. Just for the record, I am going to stand my ground and wait for December. That snow symbol will be removed until that date. Come December…. well I’ll be whizzing down the slopes with the rest of you!
This photo shows more of the purple in the yarn, but in reality it is more vibrant. I got it wrong last time. The yarn is KnitPro, but the shade is Deep Waters Tonal.
For more knitting and reading inspiration, pop over to Ginny‘s. I can’t promise snow though.
I know a lot of people who love bamboo needles, I’ve never used them but I might have to get a pair to find out what the attraction is! Lovely shawl.
They really made a difference knitting the finer yarn….while they lasted 🙁
Such beautiful yarn colors! And I would cry if I had to go back to knitting with metal needles again ;(. Thank goodness for wood and bamboo!
I know the feeling. A new set is on my shopping list. Really good to knit with.
I’ve been promising to knit myself a shawl for the longest of time, maybe when the socks, hats and gloves are done and the christmas sewing is finished I will gather supplies and make one in the dark days of January, some knitting to get me through the darkest days of mid-winter. Yours looks beautiful and cosy, must get me some bamboo too, never knitted on bamboo needles, they sound like a good idea. xx
I think a January project is a brilliant idea, for sure. Cheerful yarn on a cold evening is just the way to while away January. I can recommend wooden needles.
The shawl is looking lovely. There was a little mishap with a wooden needle here just recently. A small boy was involved. No injuries. Four delays later a repeat mishap involving a happy dog, again no injuries. When will I learn….
xx
I’m on the same learning curve. Wooden needles do not survive as easily as metal ones. Oh, but they are great to knit with!
Your shawl is quite lovely!
Thanks Emily. I can’t wait to finish it!
Your shawl is gorgeous, but when does one actually wear a shawl? Please excuse my naivety.
But I do confess to lusting after bed socks, so I am not a total heathen 😉
And I LOVE that you were totally outvoted in your last post.
Get that snow badge right back up there!
Ha. Good question. I was given a shawl, a few years ago. I guess everyone is different, but I tend to throw it over on a summer evening, or, in the winter, when I just need another layer. Times when my self consciousnous prevents me resorting to a blanket or duvet!!!! Using this finer yarn makes it a very light shawl. More like one of those wedding ring shawls, so it can be worn as an alternative to a scarf.
As for the snow. I’m still going to hang out for December, although the children have increased their efforts. We’ll see!
Yay – you’re knitting something for yourself! The yarn looks gorgeous. And I hear ya about those slippery metal needles AND the easy to break (or mistake for a skewer) wooden ones. I’ve been having such a frustrating time with the metal dpns I’m using on a sleeve at the moment.
Feels a little bit indulgent at this time of year to be knitting for myself. Smiling at the idea of using the needle as a skewer. Yes, I can imagine that. Mine didn’t last long enough to go down that path. Hey, maybe next time!
beautiful blues in your wool. your shawl will be so pretty!
everyone is so different in needle choices, it’s a lucky thing there are
different materials to choose from. i LOVE metal and only use addi lace
for everything, except dpn’s and then it’s the beautiful smooth wood of
crystal palace. they feel polished and wool just glides and they are so pretty!
Your knitting is so beautiful. I guess we all find the needles that suit us. I love that I’m still learning. 🙂
