TF turned 6 this week. A very happy boy. He had the choice of a party or a family day out. He chose the latter.
What to do? He loves lego, sport, dinosaurs, wildlife, vehicles… all the usual kind of pursuits that a six year old boy loves. It needed to be an outing that everyone enjoyed.
Hmm. How about a dinosaur hunt… or maybe I should put it as a fossil hunt. A trip to Watchet. Hellwell Bay. Perfect.
I love this part of the country. It reminds me of Rupert Bear. Rolling hills and perfectly arranged villages nestling into the landscape. A steam engine puffed along the railway track beside us, at one stage, taking people to the seaside. Once we reached Watchet, we could see the engine in the station and hear it toot-toot as we searched for fossils down on the beach.
It is so easy to find fossils on the beach. Each find better than the last. The children calling to us to see their latest discovery. The dog woofing for the stragglers to keep up.
Apart from ammonites, we found fossilized coiled oysters or devil’s toe nails as they are more colourfully called. There were shells, sea glass and crab claws.
I even found a mammoth’s tooth, but dropped it before I realised what it was. Rats!
Everywhere we looked there was something amazing to see and touch. Our children are in danger of thinking that all beaches are lined with such obvious fossils.
TF came home convinced that he had found a dinosaur bone. He had a good day. We all did.
He loved his birthday treat. So, happy birthday, my sweet boy.
Can we go again?
Now that is a fab birthday celebration!!! Just totally love it!!! We also had a birthdya this weekend… happy brilliant birthday!!!
Thanks se7en. And we had ice cream too! 😀
Glad your son had a happy day. My boys did this with Beavers at Lulworth Cove. They had a brilliant time
Such a fun activity! We found sea glass too. I think any kind of beachcombing is fun.
oh wow! what a perfect place for an outing!!
i want to go there for my birthday now 🙂
Ha! It turned out as a wonderful day. No queues either. Definitely my kind of outing. 😀
Looks like a great day out! Glad to have fund you through #oldiesbutgoodies going to have a little browse through your blog now over a hot cuppa while the kids nap!
You’ve made my day. Thanks for visiting. 🙂
Hi visiting you from the Oldies & Goldies Bloghop. Goodness you found loads of fossils. We have done fossil hunting on the Dorset Jurassic coast, but never been so successful. Helwell Bay is now on my list of places to visit with my 8 yr old.
It is a SSI, so well preserved. The fossils are big and literally scattered everywhere. I hope you make it to the beach. It is a lovely place.
I love that he chose a family day out over a party – none of mine would ever opt for that! And what great fun you had! My boy would love that bow and arrow 🙂 Thanks for linking to #oldiesbutgoodies
I love throwing their parties, but I do love it when they choose a family day out instead. Easier to focus on them. The bow and arrow have been a big success. The children love holding archery competitions. Great fun.
What a lovely idea for a birthday adventure! Time spent with family is so precious. Helen
A day like this really suited him. He was so excited to be looking for dinosaurs!
