They say trouble comes in threes. A strange phrase, when you spend too long thinking about it. Have you noticed how easily it’s dismissed with one or two obvious upsets? Yet completely embraced once the list of troubles tallies up to three. It seems, on the flip of a coin, it turns into a well established law and guarantees that nothing else will happen. Three at the maximum. Everyone knows that. Who wouldn’t choose to believe it?
I believe.
I believe in the three.
This week, we have been without the oven, heating/hot water and the washing machine. I make that three. That is enough. Fortunately, I am a contingency planner. I have a portfolio stuffed with Plan Bs and Plan Cs, and we were fine, while it was sorted out. One night, I slow cooked the stew on top of the woodburner.
I coped.
Although I’m now thinking I should invest in a second washing machine. I opted for letting the washing pile up in the hope that the washing machine would be fixed soon. It reached quite a height. I even crocheted a wash cloth to avoid handwashing.
We all survived.
Everything is fixed and running again. We are back to having a clean slate. Our trouble gauge is back to normal levels. Maybe last week was a fluke. Maybe three troubles is a myth. Just a coincidence. A law? Pah! Only a convenient way of thinking. After all, when are we ever trouble free?
Joining in with Anne’s Word of the Week. My word is trouble.
I always, always, wait for the third trouble, it’s strange isn’t it. I know I had it passed down by my Mum, but I don’t make a deal of it so I haven’t passed it to my kids. The buck stops here! But the troubles don’t stop. I’m glad all is fixed now and may all your troubles be over for a long time. x
I think we ignore the minor mishaps to make the law of three work. Good job not passing it on.
I have noticed the “Law of 3s” too. I know it’s a coincidence but I still think it’s strange how it seems to work. Just glad to read that your 3 troubles have passed and your heat, laundry, and oven are in working order.
This week has been easier.
What a week? When our kitchen was being fit the thing I missed the most was the washer, it amazing what you can cook in a slow cooker. Glad you have all fixed, and I believe things come in 3s too x
I think the washer is the machine I’d miss the most. Hand washing is something I’d rather not do.
I always look for the 3rd trouble too! I think you did well to keep your sanity after losing your oven, hot water and washing machine!
I hope next week is a little kinder to you. x
It was. 😉
I am glad everything is fixed, I hope you get back on top of the mountain of washing soon. Last week was not a week where you wanted to be without heating! It was freezing! Eek x
Feels so much better to be back to manageable levels again.
I’m glad that everything is fixed again and good luck with getting the mountain of washing back down to reasonable levels! It’s funny that things often do seem to come in three’s – or perhaps it’s just that we notice it more when they do. I know that when there’s been two of something happening, I do find myself anticipating a third and it often comes. Perhaps that’s because I’m looking out for it though, who knows? #WotW
I think I ignore the minor mishaps and not count them. There is some level of comfort when you notice the third. Even if it doesn’t spell the end!
