During the week, I looked up from the paperwork on my desk and spotted a big, white dog trying to get through our back gate. Probably a Labrador, but my view was disrupted by the gate and undergrowth. It was stocky and light coloured. Exceedingly large. Just as I was pondering how its tail was sticking up in the air, in a most unlikely Labrador way, the tail chose that moment to bend into an S shape.
This was not a dog. It was a swan.
We have rabbits and pheasants that wander round our garden, as if it’s their garden. Certainly their territory. The odd large bird of prey may land. Crows, rooks, ravens, woodpeckers, as well as other smaller birds. We’ve had deer, badgers and foxes, but never, ever a swan.
It seemed very determined to set this right and get in. It worked the stock fencing beside the gate with its beak. Pushing its head through to wiggle its way in.
Eventually, we opened the gate, at which point the swan decided it would rather retrace its path away from interfering humans. I don’t blame it. We didn’t see it again. I’m quite glad. Knowing my luck, it would involve a whole bundle of paperwork if a swan decided to take over the garden.

Paperwork
Like most people, I have enough of my own paperwork. This week, I helped my daughter to fill in more forms for her new job, which was a pleasure to be there for her. Another first under her belt.
To add to my own share of paperwork, I’ve been tackling a new sock knitting pattern. It’s from a book I picked up recently. Unfortunately, the instructions have so many errors, that I’ve had to rework it. It took one evening to figure out it wasn’t me, it was them. Another evening to rewrite it on paper.
I’ve started knitting the first sock. Not my best stitches, which probably means I’ll keep this pair for me. This project will go everywhere with me, as I grab a few minutes. Not to the gym, because, unlike some people, I’ve never perfected the art of running/walking and knitting at the same time.

Joining in with Anne’s word of the week linky. What’s your word?

What a surprise to see the swan, it was probably for the best that it turned around and left.
That is a shame there were errors with the sock knitting pattern. x
I had images of the swan becoming stuck in the fence, which would have been distressing.
Glad the run-in with the wandering swan was just that. How can people publish patterns with mistakes in? Anyway, so good that you figured it out and I hope the socks turn out fabulously. Have a great week ahead.
I still can’t figure out how a pattern is printed in a book with major errors in it. I’ve searched for an errata, but no luck.
What an unexpected surprise the swan must have been! It must be lovely to be surrounded by so much nature right in your back garden.
Paperwork seems to dominate our lives in one way or another. Your daughter’s paperwork for her new job sounds exciting, though. Good luck with the socks, it looks like you have made a great start.
We are blessed with so many wild creatures sharing our garden. The swan was a surprise.
Hopefully she’s submitted all the paperwork now. Always nice to send it off.
Wow, a swan in your garden. I don’t think that’s something I’ve seen and we do get a lot of wildlife living next to the canal. We once had a hedgehog just walk in casually through our patio door! I’ve had my fill of paperwork, although most of it’s been online, we did have fun writing down out holiday plans in my notebook.
How wonderful to have a hedgehog. We used to have a big population of hedgehogs, but they did not mix well with the badgers.
That’s certainly a surprise to find a swan trying to get in! Glad it decided to leave peacefully. Paperwork is always a joy..
Me too! For the best it turned round.
Oh how special was the swan visit!!! So cool.
It was, but I’m glad it left.
What a surprise to see the swan – it did sound very determined to get in until you opened the gate for it! How lovely to be surrounded by wildlife. Good luck to your daughter with her new job. Glad you managed to work out that it was the sock pattern that was wrong and rewrite it. #WotW
I was worried it would get stuck in the fence. We are so lucky to see the wildlife around here.
ha ha to you on the treadmill and knitting your socks at the same time, can picture it. what a surprise to see a swan trying to get through the gate. #wotw
