During the week, I looked up from the paperwork on my desk and spotted a big, white dog trying to get through our back gate. Probably a Labrador, but my view was disrupted by the gate and undergrowth. It was stocky and light coloured. Exceedingly large. Just as I was pondering how its tail was sticking up in the air, in a most unlikely Labrador way, the tail chose that moment to bend into an S shape.
This was not a dog. It was a swan.
We have rabbits and pheasants that wander round our garden, as if it’s their garden. Certainly their territory. The odd large bird of prey may land. Crows, rooks, ravens, woodpeckers, as well as other smaller birds. We’ve had deer, badgers and foxes, but never, ever a swan.
It seemed very determined to set this right and get in. It worked the stock fencing beside the gate with its beak. Pushing its head through to wiggle its way in.
Eventually, we opened the gate, at which point the swan decided it would rather retrace its path away from interfering humans. I don’t blame it. We didn’t see it again. I’m quite glad. Knowing my luck, it would involve a whole bundle of paperwork if a swan decided to take over the garden.

Paperwork
Like most people, I have enough of my own paperwork. This week, I helped my daughter to fill in more forms for her new job, which was a pleasure to be there for her. Another first under her belt.
To add to my own share of paperwork, I’ve been tackling a new sock knitting pattern. It’s from a book I picked up recently. Unfortunately, the instructions have so many errors, that I’ve had to rework it. It took one evening to figure out it wasn’t me, it was them. Another evening to rewrite it on paper.
I’ve started knitting the first sock. Not my best stitches, which probably means I’ll keep this pair for me. This project will go everywhere with me, as I grab a few minutes. Not to the gym, because, unlike some people, I’ve never perfected the art of running/walking and knitting at the same time.
