Out and about

out in Glastonbury
Star child shop

Not just tubs of herbs and dried plants, but a whole wall of them. It always fascinates me. I feel like a child transfixed by the contents of a sweet shop. Head held high as I try to read the labels on the top shelf. Most names I recognise like hysopp and hops. Others are unfamiliar, such as oakmoss and kinnik kinnik. All of them make me wonder what purpose each herb is bought for. I have so many questions. Being out and about in Glastonbury is always fun.

This week has been all about being out.

The Gauntlet

Glastonbury

My dance class is paused for the summer, so for the first time in months, I was free to go to Glastonbury market on Tuesday. Both daughters came with me. We made a fun day of it.

I’d read about a small café in the Gauntlet*. The Gauntlet is a narrow alley way of shops which I’d not found before. We walked passed psychic, tarot and aura reading shops among the handmade clothes, music and essential oil stores. Right at the end, we found the café and had lunch. The food was fabulous and well worth finding it.

*It’s named the Gauntlet after a nearby factory that manufactured gauntlet gloves.

Out for lunch

The café feels like you’re walking into someone’s front room, with décor that fits right into Glastonbury. The café owners made us feel so welcome. While we waited, we watched people walking down the alleyway. There was even a bit of drama, but everything settled down quickly. If you ever wanted to feel like an extra in a Harry Potter movie, this is the town. It’s worth pushing passed the touristy shops.

Plants in picture frames

Furniture

With everyone home, we’ve been moving furniture around. Some is going out and we’re looking to replace it with more practical pieces. An old filing cabinet has already been picked up by someone local. I’m hoping to find second hand wardrobes and a bureau.

We’ve visited a few second hand shops. I’m loving searching for the right piece. I went to see one, with the most brilliant mechanism for opening and shutting the desk part. I’d have bought it just for that, but it wasn’t deep enough.

We’ll get there.

Reclamation yard

Also went to a local reclamation place. I was hopeful, but nothing remotely right. Plenty of curios to look at too. I love the old garden statues and wonder about the sort of places that they used to reside. One day I’ll bring one home.

Hollyhocks out In Wells
Wool shop alley way

Wells

I managed to drag Youngest out for a haircut. He wanted a cut, but always has something else to do. Afterwards, we sat in the marketplace and ate ice creams. I had a few errands to run while we were there, but we also popped into the wool shop for sock wool and black piping for a new cushion. Also took a few charity bags out of the house and donated them.

Strawberry Thieves

Cushion

While we were out in Glastonbury, I found offcuts of the Strawberry Thieves in upholstery fabric. It’s one of my favourites. I’m turning it into cushions. I used the black piping and an old damask curtain as backing fabric. Almost finished the first one, but couldn’t resist putting the cushion inset in to see how it would look. They are going to be lovely plump cushions

I have plans for the rest of the fabric.

Sun is out, bumblebee on sunflower

I suspect there will be more out and about time this weekend too. Fingers crossed I find at least one wardrobe this weekend.

  1. What a lovely week of going out!
Glastonbury does look like a place where you can step back in time. I love places where you can see and feel all the history.
Good luck with your hunt for some furniture. I want to replace all my modern Ikea things with better quality, second-hand pieces eventually.
The cushions have turned out beautifully. I love the black piping around them. They look very regal.

    1. Oh I like that. I hadn’t thought of them being regal, but I’m going to run with it. I want to replace our Ikea things too, with more interesting pieces. They were an easy solution at the time, but I miss the details on other furniture.

  2. Those tubs of herbs and dried plants made me think of old sweet shops too.
How fun to be out and about and what a great week.
That cafe look so cute and the food looks fantastic! I do love visiting second hand shops, you never know what you are going to find. x

  3. Looks like such a fun week with so many gorgeous experiences.
Second hand shops are always such a treat, right? Its like a little treasure trove.

    1. We certainly enjoyed ourselves. Yes, second hand shops are a fun. I’ve to a couple of Aladdin caves this weekend.

  4. A busy week, but also relaxed, I love quirky hidden shops. A lot are inaccessible for me now, it was once one of my favourite things to do. I also love your William Morris cushions, what a great find.
