We have both Greater Spotted and Green Woodpeckers visit our garden. I spotted this one making the most of the short grass. Hunting for ants. We have plenty to share.
I love the texture of his feathers. It makes me want to pick up a pencil and draw. I suspect he’s a juvenile. He hopped so close to the house. I could really study him and his behaviour.
Usually, if a woodpecker arrives in the garden, then the shout will go out, so that no one misses seeing him. This week, I was on my own. Apart from the dogs, and really they are not interested. I grabbed my telephoto lens and then had that moment of indecision. Should I risk opening the window or just shoot through the double glazing? Cleaned the day before, but still.
I could do both. This is the photo through the glass. There is another, but do you really want to see the empty stone?

We have about four Greater Spotted Woodpeckers visit our various feeders here in my garden and I’ve captured them numerous times, but I still can’t resist taking more.
I’ve yet to see a Green Woodpecker though, but I’ll keep looking ;D

Lovely photo ! well done…. I tried to photo a humming bird this summer ….I’ll post my photo’s if you don’t laugh too loud ..they are of the “you see that tiny funny smudge just in the edge of the shot “….”well that is a hummingbird” lol
I can imagine that hummingbirds are difficult to photograph. Seeing as I’ve never taken a photo of one, you are one better than me. Love to see it. I do have a lovely photo of a chipmunk in New England from 20 years ago. Question of spot the chipmunk among the Autumn leaves which my husband still teases me about. Fortunately it is from before digital and I don’t fancy my chances of scanning it. You are saved. 🙂
I love the colors and the markings on this bird, I was so pulled into the greens and greys of his body that I didn’t even see the gorgeous red on his head! I’m glad you decided to take it through the window before opening, I would have hated to miss this guy!!!
The red was muted on the bird. Focus is more on the wings, so I guess the head doesn’t grab the eye. I shall perfect the art of opening the window silently. Else leaving it open, just in case!
