Lights – my word of the week

Lights…

Music….

aaaaaand……..let the festivities begin!

School broke up yesterday. Woo Hoo! Not a moment too soon. I know the children are ready for a break. It has been a hectic week, to say the least. I’m not sure we could have squeezed much more in, on some of the days. The sooner someone invents the teleporter, or gives me the ability to be in two places at the same time, the better.

All done now. Thank goodness. We’re ready to sit back and enjoy the run up to Christmas. My favourite time. Time filled with chatter, crafting and music. Our little cottage really comes to life.

All three children seem to be taking turns to play music. Every now and again, I can hear Christmas carols being played on the piano or harp. Someone quietly singing upstairs, to themselves.  I love the sound of music being made. The odd mistake makes it real. Repeated sections, until the player feels they have mastered it. I love it all.

(I’ve even been quietly practising, when I have the house to myself. It’s something I would like to do more. I’m late to the game, but I can see how it feeds the soul.)We’ve been out and about too. One evening, we headed over to Bath for our annual trip to the Christmas market. The temporary, wooden chalets line the cobbled streets around the Abbey, and up Milsom Street too, changing the atmosphere of the area for a few, short weeks.

Twinkly lights are strung up between the stalls and around the trees, snaking up the trunks and branches. Street performers play their musical instruments that had toes tapping and small children dancing delightfully, making the market very festive. There was the fragrance of mulled wine and dried orange/clove decorations adding to the experience too. Something to soothe all the senses. I love it. We all do.

We walked around with hot chocolates and mulled wine. Came away with another star lantern. More lights for the house.

Another evening, we dropped off eldest teen and friend at their 6th form Christmas party, being held in a local hotel. They seem to have a good time. Mr TTC and I took the opportunity to take in the Christmas lights in Wells and stop for a quick drink at a favourite pub, without any children. Not something we do very often. Wells’ high street has one of the best Christmas light displays I’ve seen in a while. A simple pleasure.

Apart from Mr TTC doing his annual Santa Scramble, which was muddy and wet, to say the least, that pretty much sums up our week. A lazy weekend, I hope, in front of us, as we all recover. Plus we have the Winter Solstice to celebrate tomorrow. Heralding the return of the lighter days. I’m definitely ready for more light.

  1. Those Christmas lights look so pretty. I always love the winter solstice – mainly because I know it marks the days starting to get longer again! How lovely to hear your children practising Christmas songs and what a lovely way to enjoy Christmas music. Hope you are having a nice lazy weekend and enjoying it. Merry Christmas to you all x #WotW

  2. Of course I knew today was the solstice – but yeah – I forgot it means the days are getting longer now! Wonderful news! 😀 Meanwhile, enjoy your kids being home, and hearing music around the house – that’s great.

  3. How lovely that you can hear your children playing Christmas songs, such a lovely way to enjoy the festivities! I love how cosy your inglenook looks. I could imagine sitting there with a glass of Baileys and a good book. Perfect! 😉 x

  4. I miss having the house filled with music at Christmastime. Enjoy your 3 kiddos while you can! My youngest used to play the piano and my middle son played the guitar and drums. There was always a racket going on at our house! 🙂
