Emerging

Has it gone yet?

hmm?

I can’t see it anymore. Must be.

Phew! At last.

Should be safe to venture out again. Now it’s slunk away. What a time. I’m talking about January. This year it somehow turned out to be particularly harsh, so I skipped it. Practically the whole month.

It helped that I could snuggle down into my burrow and work. So much to do that it dug into my evenings too and I could ignore the lack of light.

Flu took out two weeks by itself. Not just me. Most of the family too. I’ve never had flu before, so that was a surprise. The stories about not being able to get out of bed are true. Even if the Bank of England had fluttered every £20 note, in its possession, passed my window, I would have stayed put. At least I had time to read, sleep and lose weight. A novelty for me at this time of year.

I have been knitting. I have finished objects to show. Just need to time my models being home with the appearance of a blue sky. Not happened so far.

It’s Candlemas/ Groundhog day today. Imbolc yesterday. One of my favourite times of the year. Half way there. We’ll make cakes, light candles and celebrate.

Snowdrops are putting on a show in the garden and hedgerows. The birds are everywhere. Not only the regular garden inhabitants. Yesterday, I stood and talked to a woodpecker and a sparrow hawk, in the garden. Not at the same time. It doesn’t work like that.

I can see a badger has been busy digging in our garden. I sometimes come across him if I quietly wander out into the garden late at night. Usually the holes he makes are obviously about worm hunting. One night, he dug a hole that I can only think was to find one of our hibernating hedgehogs. Hard not to feel sad, but, as I’m always telling my children, there are no supermarkets in nature.

I feel like I’m emerging from hibernation. This morning was the first day of the year I woke the children up singing. This is a good sign. From under one duvet, I heard a muffled voice.

“That is such a nice way to wake up. I’ve missed you singing.”

And she meant it.

Joining in with #wotw with “emerging”. I’m back.

  1. Glad to hear that you are emerging and I love that your daughter was so happy to hear you singing again. It does sound like a lovely way to be woken up. Flu is horrible – I’ve had it once and completely agree with what you said about the £20 notes – I wouldn’t have stirred for them either. Glad that you are feeling much better now. It is lovely to see the snowdrops appearing now and to be the other side of January – it is such a gloomy month. #WotW

  2. Emerging is a great word to choose, I am so keen for spring to emerge and I’m pleased to see the back of January. I had flu once, around 15 years ago and it was horrendous, so I sympathise. Glad you’re all on the up and the singing has recommenced x Thanks for sharing with #WotW

    1. My song of torture choice is “Good morning” from Singing in the Rain. Hits the right tone! Knitting was very slow. I took one row at a time.

  3. What a great word!
Ahh! I am glad to hear you are feeling better….We’ve all had the flu here this past week. I haven’t been so ill in years. We’re still not over it but we’re getting there.
    Gorgeous photos x

  4. Hi Cheryl, welcome back! I am so glad to see the back of January too. It’s been a miserable month. My husband had flu a few years back and was just as you described, he lost 6kgin two weeks and I was seriously worried about him as he is rarely ill. I do hope you and your family have come out of it none the worse… I’m glad to know that I am not the only person who talks to nature (and the dogs… don’t forget the cat too). My family thinks I’m bonkers (but I’m happy). My daughter hates the fact that I am chirpy in the morning, I think my days would be numbered if I started waking her up with my singing (I’m sure if she didn’t get me the neighbours may!)… How exciting that you get a badger in your garden. You are right it is a shame how nature works sometimes, but that is nature for you.

    xx

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one. Chirpy in the morning is the best way to start. I do talk to the badger too, but he tends to grumble at me like an old man and bumble off. So rude!

  5. Emerging is great choice of words, certainly feeling the same here, though touch wood, not had the flu, just horrible coughs and colds, the flu certainly seems to be talking it out of everyone I know that has had but glad you are now emerging into February and hopefully all the joys that nature brings.
