Action – my word(s) of the week

End of March already and it feels good. I have tomato seedlings to pot up and squash seeds to sow. There are practical craft projects lining up in a nearly orderly manner, which I’m excited to get on with. It’s amazing how the blue sky and a touch of warmth makes everything feel more possible and my week has felt action packed.

Weekend

Eldest was down for the weekend. I don’t know if she imagined that it would be a quiet, relaxing couple of days to recover. She’s in the last throes of her four year Uni course and they are not letting up. A weekend away, eating homecooked meals and not studying probably sounded good. Except we made it a tad more action packed.

She’s off on a walking trip, this weekend, so I took her down to Wells to pick up new hiking boots. Her old ones were on their way out. I was quite surprised that she selected a pair quickly, along with new boot socks. I don’t know what happens to boot socks in our house, but they vanish quickly.

Action! Museum exhibition

It left time, for lunch and a bit of window shopping. I loved having time with her. We also popped into the museum, which I’ve not been to since before the children were born. They were running an exhibition that I thought would interest her, with a medieval French theme, drawing from the Bayeaux Tapestry and French comics such as Tintin.

I was also taken by the story telling of four plaster casts of stone carvings from the Cathedral. The originals are way up high, at the top of a Cathedral column. I can imagine people sitting in their pew, listening to a sermon, and looking up at the carvings high up. A cautionary tale above their heads. I’ve added the four photos in here, so you can follow the story.

Sunday

Eldest also had a morning clay pigeon bothering, at a charity event, with Mr TTC and her brother, which they all seemed to enjoy, before she headed back to city life and more essay writing. I went to visit my sister, so missed out on the event.

Second Hand Finds

I’ve had a few good finds in the charity shops recently. Four dresses, which I’m looking forward to changing up two of them slightly. One is a denim dress, that I’m going to add ribbon (below), which I found in a local antique store, along with my sewing machine brooch and blue buttons that have an optical illusion. Difficult to describe or photograph, but they are the Tardis of the button world.

Also found a duvet set, that I absolutely love. It’s a Cath Kidston and the pattern is Forever rose (photo below). Reminds me of an inside cover of one of children’s books. It was in a charity shop and had a hole in the seam which looks more like a manufacturing error than through use. It doesn’t look like it’s been used much, so I suspect it’s been in someone’s mending pile for some time. A quick fix with my sewing machine and it is as good as new. I now have a second cover for our king duvet, which means I no longer have to rush the drying process on wash day.

Apart from work and my usual action packed schedule of fitness classes/gym, that was my week. I finished my latest dance class and have signed up for another block of lessons. Definitely pushing myself out of my comfort zone and into action, which is no bad thing.

  1. I always feel so much more motivated when the sun is shining.
How lovely to have your eldest home for a little while and spend some time with her. The shopping and trip to the museum sound like fun. Those stone carvings are interesting.
Good job with the charity shop finds. x

    1. The sun and blue skies really work their magic. I’m looking forward to the Easter break when both daughters are home for more than a weekend.

  2. A blue sky can completely change my mood and motivation, I wish I could bottle it sometimes.
Thanks for sharing the photos of the grape thieves. What a savage consequence a farmer with a pitchfork! I love a good museum.
Lovely charity shop finds. I found a Cath Kidston coin purse this week for just 50p which made me very happy indeed.
I hope you had a nice weekend.

  3. A nice week full of action for sure. What a scary story those stone carvings tell. I love how creative you get when project presents itself, the duvet is lovely. I would like to visit a museum this year. I’ll put it on my imaginary bucket list.

  4. Nice weather does make a big difference doesn’t it? I’ve definitely noticed a shift in my energy levels as a result of it. Good luck with all the craft projects and getting your seedlings potted up. It’s funny how socks seem to vanish. We have a similar problem with ballet socks. I love the carvings and the story they tell. The charity shop finds sound good and I love the ribbon that you are going to use with the denim dress. #WotW

    1. Ballet socks must be small too. I’ve started using net bags for socks and we are losing less socks. Not in time to save the boot socks!
