Wednesday already! Knitting and reading. Its Ginny’s Yarn Along again.
After digging around my Charles Dickens books yesterday, I found myself reading one. Hard Times. I haven’t read it for a long time. Its kind of comforting to pick this book up again. Familiar, but so much I have forgotten. Also I couldn’t help peeking into my couple of old Punchs and All the Year Round. The latter is a collection of 1870s weekly magazines “conducted by Charles Dickens”. All of the books are dusty, even though I keep them in a glass fronted cupboard. Hmm. I need to tackle the dust in the bookcases.
Knit wise, I have finished the pair of fingerless gloves from last week and they have been stored away. I decided to leave the mitten part off this time and I really like the difference. My knitted patchwork blanket squares are now sitting proudly in the full glare of my attention at the top of my knitting basket. I had so much fun making these squares, last year, but it is time to finish this blanket. I am going to knit plain garter squares to go between the more elaborate squares. I’m hoping that the plain ones will highlight the more interesting squares. Lots of squares to knit and hopefully this will help deal with more of my odd balls of wool.
I think that “Hard Times” and these squares are going to keep me busy for several weeks to come!
Oh, I thought I would share this time saving tip I found in one of my copies of Punch.
“Mrs Adams, do you ever dust my things?”
“Well, Sir, no, Sir. But sometimes I blows!”

Each of the yarns, that I’m using, bring back memories of previous knitting, and when and where I knitted it. I love projects that use the leftovers, like the hexi patchwork I’m finishing at the moment. Doesn’t have the same effect when cooking with left over food!

I’m not sure if I will be able to resist making a few more pairs. They are so satisfying.
That book is too wonderful! I have a passion for antique books myself, though they’re dustier than they should be.

I remember hearing about a scheme over here, where they were not going to dust the books in a stately home (NT) and see what happened. I wonder if they discovered anything new.
I’ve never done fingerless gloves woth the finger bits in, I always do the where you make the thumb hole and go staright across the hand (iykwim!) I think I’m going to make them a future project. Your squares look lovely and I’m sure the finished blanket will be warm, snuggly and attractive.
I find the half fingers more comfortable to wear than the straight across the knuckle style. The fingers are really easy to do. If you can knit the rest of the glove the fingers are a doddle!

Priceless bit of Punch there, Cheryl…………I used to work in a local solicitors office in my younger days and they kept copies of Punch in the waiting room, I always found them a good read in my lunch hour. I have most copies of Charles Dickens but must admit I don’t read them very often now, love the knitted squares for your blanket. x
I love the older Punch. When I was a teenager, our dentist used to have modern copies and I always felt vaguely disappointed that they weren’t like the ones bond up in the old books.
The dusting illustration and caption – very funny! I can so relate. Looks like you’ve been busy with the squares and mitts. Can’t wait to see the blanket when it’s complete.
I love the old illustrations. Humour changes over the years, but I think this one is still relevant.

I must admit that i HATE dusting. It seems like such a colossal waste of time. It doesn’t help that I live in a very dusty climate. Love those gloves.
Ah dust. Gets everywhere in no time at all. Dusty climate sounds awful. 🙁

I think the garter squares are a good compromise. Otherwise this blanket will take years to make. I’d love to have it in use and being enjoyed. So lovely to meet folk with similar interests. Ah, the beauty of blogging! 🙂
