Something different and something slightly different for my Yarn-Along post this week. A title grabbed my eye while I was in the library picking up a pile of books for the children. It was in the fiction section and had Quilt in the title. Being on a tight time schedule, I swept it up as I passed the shelf and onto the booking out machine. (Does everyone have these machines now? Borrowing and returning automatically done by a scanning machine, with no need for a librarian.)
Not sure about this novel. I’m doing a lot of patching fabric and yarn at the moment, so the title sang to me. It is very light and easy to read, but in a style I don’t really enjoy. Hmm. I’ll give it a chance.
I’m back to the patchwork knitted blanket. I’ve started the border for my blanket. Still experimenting with my idea for joining the squares together. I’ll give more details once I know that it works. I finished the Easter chicks in time. I decided to leave the legs off, as I knew that these little birds would get plenty of play. They certainly have been played with.

Ahhh yes about the book! The same thing happened to me at the library the other day…browsing the shelf and a book titled :”The Wedding Quilt” jumped out at me for the same reason the above did for you. I love sewing and quilting. I hadn’t realized the “Quilt” books were a part of a series until I got it home. I agree it’s a light, easy read but the style isn’t speaking to me either. And we have those machines at the library too! My little one loves to help “pay” for the books!
The library machines are a big hit with my children too. They do like the touch screens. The book is a light read. I guess I’m just looking for something more thought provoking. I will finish it though. 🙂
I haven’t seen one of those machines at the library before! I wonder if it is more of a help or bother to the librarians that still work there? All I can think about are those self checkout lines at the grocery store…which never seem to work well 🙂 The Easter chicks are so cute!
I have found that if the machine can do the job, the librarians will always point me towards it rather than doing it themselves. They do it in a nice training kind of way. I guess it does free them up to focus on providing advice on books. I wish the machines in the grocery store worked as well as the library ones. I still prefer to queue for a real person to scan my shopping. 😀

sorry the book isn’t really speaking to you… sometimes in just have to admit that i’m somewhat of a book snob and walk away from “light” fiction!
I love the children’s imagination. I’m so glad that they want to share their fun with me! I’m going to finish the book, but I do know what you mean.
That book is actually part of a series. I’ve read a couple of the books in the series and really enjoyed them even though I, myself, don’t quilt.
I’ve read some of the reviews and I can see this series has a big following. I shall finish this one, but I’m not sure I’ll be picking up any of the others. I’ll wait and see.
I love when a title grabs your attention, but sometimes I wonder if the title isn’t better written than what’s inside! We have those machines too at our library. When they first arrived, I didn’t like them because I wanted a ‘real live’ librarian, but truly…we use the librarians plenty at our library for other things. (and my kids LOVE checking out their own stuff)

I think you are right that the librarians can concentrate on other aspects of the library. I always print a receipt, to keep track on titles and books. I would be lost now the dates aren’t printed in the front of the books to remind me!
I have enjoyed the 5 or so Quilter’s Legacy books by Jennifer Chiaverini that I have read. They are, like you said, light, easy, reads. Perfect reading for when you just want to relax and read wihtout thinking too much! 🙂

Certainly you did need to check out that book. A friend loaned me a title that had knitting in the title years ago. I had a similar experience. Simple read… not really written in my style… yet I enjoyed it just for the knitting theme.

I would have given up this book if it had not been that quilting features in the title and the content. It does show the power of a good title. 🙂
That is just the kind of book I would pick up in the library too. I’ve only made baby or lap quilts, but my Grandma is a quilter so it totally appeals. Love that wee chick, and the chocolate helmet is the best!
The power of a good title and the way a book is displayed. I haven’t found a fiction book based on quilting before, although I’m sure that I will find lots more now. 😀
We have both automatic as well as some Librarians…I suppose it reflects the cuts to library services. Hope the book gets better…

I suspect that there is at least one less librarian on duty now, but I could be wrong. If it makes a difference on keeping library branches open, that has got to be good.
I love those machines, and my kiddos do too. Our branch does not have the return one, although our old one did. The library seemed to lose a lot less books when they had the return scanner. I also find myself grabbing a book based on title from a library display. Sometimes that is all the time I have to “browse.”
I do like getting the printed receipt once I’ve scanned a return book in. Each child can take 20 books out and they read them at different rates, so I need to keep a good track on them all. It really is a great service.

Oh, that’s pretty yarn — great color! And I didn’t know about the booking out scanner, but I haven’t been to a library in years (sad to say). We live in the country, so I just order books from Amazon — thank goodness for cheap books online!

Our library service is great. The mobile library visits our village once a week, but sadly I’ve never been in the right place at the right time! Must try harder!
