Why we didn’t buy school shoes.

(Before I start, I should explain that I do not like shoe shopping. In fact, I really don’t enjoy retail therapy at all. I’m immune to the buzz it triggers. I can imitate the activity, but I really would prefer to be looking for bees and beetles.)

Good Friend – “But you’ve had all holiday to organize new shoes.”

Me – “True, but we were busy.”

Good Friend – “Doing what?”

Good question. Well, with some thought, here are five good reasons why I  didn’t get round to buying new school shoes or organizing haircuts before the children went back to school:

  1. Craft activities  – needle felting, making peg dolls, decorating t-shirts using sewing and painting, and more.

2. Fun outside – long walks with all the family, playing badminton in the garden, going on bike rides, spending lots of time watching the mining bees in the garden, planting seeds.

3. Fun days out  – cinema to see the Pirate Captain and then visit the actual Aardman ship they used in the movie (to be found in the M-Shed in Bristol), visiting family, going on museum trips.

4. Catch up with reading – lots and lots.

5. Fun doing exciting science experiment.( from top left – glow in the dark jelly, UV light on tonic water, UV light on children’s crayons, electroscope, making magnets, tiny bag nature hunt and watch decay, dunking diver, magnet from hard disk comparison and chromatography. Also sound waves through different states of matter – but no photo!)

So there you are. Far too busy having fun to go shoe shopping. In case you are wondering, shoes have now been bought, but haircuts are still waiting.

  1. Oops? Is it a pre-requisite to buy school shoes for the start of each term? I just get them when they complain their shoes hurt! And as for haircuts, well we tried but failed, not waiting ages with toddler in tow! Sounds like a wonderful Easter break, much better than any retail therapy!

    1. 😀 😀 No, its not mandatory before the start of term. The start of term is my trigger point. My children don’t always complain when their shoes are too tight. Embarrassed to say, we once went up several shoe sizes between shoe shopping trips. 😳 I need trigger points otherwise I forget to check. Also have one for putting salt in the dishwasher that works very well. Trigger point for vacuuming doesn’t work quite as well.

  2. well i say pooh on shoe shopping! especially when you have so many other wonderful things to occupy your time! it looks like you had a wonderful break!
(and i’ve started shoe shopping online – then you don’t have to go anywhere and the shoes just come to your door! voila!)

    1. On-line shoe shopping sounds like something that I could cope with. Not sure it would work with the children’s school shoes. At least its over for a few more months.

  3. I’m sure your children will remember their school holidays with fond memories and nostalgia…………shoe buying can be done anytime, making childhood memories is priceless……….such alot packed into two weeks………….I’m amazed and slightly envious………any chance of adopting me Cheryl, lol. x

    1. Ha! I’m not sure I’ve made the best advert. Long, out of control hair and too small shoes, but a good knowledge of protons and electrons! I’m sure it will prepare my children for something! 😀

  4. I much prefer the sound of your holidays – retail therepy is not my idea of fun either! (oh and you are not the only one with children who’s feet grow 2 sizes between shoes either! 😳 )

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one. Child in question does not hobble or anything, so I guess there is no lasting damage.

  5. I am chuckling at this post… we never have time for retail anything – it just isn’t on the agenda… The things you did look so much more fun than shopping ever could be… And honestly shopping for shoes is simply the pits!!! My oldest went from size 3 to size 9… he never said a word – shows you just how often my kids actually put shoes on their feet – like never!!! Welcome to Africa and all that, shoes are just not a priority!!! Hope you all have a fun weekend!!!

    1. Ah. The idea of going barefoot! Most of the time in the UK, I need something to keep my toes warm at least, but I love the idea that ” shoes are just not a priority.” I just checked our shoe cupboard and the bare minimum footwear in our house is a pair (or two) of welly boots, one pair of smarter work shoes, one pair of hiking boots and one pair of casual shoes. I’ve listed them in the order of priority or most used. I certainly have one child who would prefer to barefoot all the time. Hope your weekend is fun.
