To spin or not

ball of wool

A while back, a friend gave me a bag of alpaca fleece. His boss’s wife keeps alpacas. He informed me, in that I-don’t-know-what-I’m-talking-about way, that it was suri alpaca. Suri alpaca is reputed to be one of the softest alpaca fleece, so I was intrigued.

For later reference, the friend has a son, who we will call J. He’ll get a mention at the end.

So I tried to spin it. With marginal success. As a beginner, I did the only sensible thing and asked my mother-in-law, who is quite the opposite of a beginner. She took it away and mixed it with other fibre, to create a ball of yarn. Verdict was that, more than likely, I have a bag of short leg hair. Not good spinning fleece.

remaining fleece

So now I have to decide what to do with the remainder. Should I persevere and spin another ball of yarn, see if it will felt, or stuff a cushion.

I do like choice.

Although I can always trust the children to add their own take on the matter.

“Why are you spinning J’s hair again?”

Aargh! It looks just like his hair.
