So many i-deers..oh deer!

white deer head

A bit of crafting news, at last.

It is often said that less is more. Other times, not.  When HomeCrafts kindly sent me a reindeer, I had enough ideas to paint many more heads. In my mind, I sketched out complicated patterns on it and contemplated different paint techniques. There was a marble effect, Mod Podging or a blast of sequins.

painting the deer

The children helped me to paint it white and we left it to dry on top of our box hedge. Looking back at it, I loved the look of the deer’s head seemingly poking through the hedge. At that moment, I knew I wanted to capture that look. Maybe displaying it in an unexpected place in our cottage. To make us smile even in the middle of winter.

ivy print on deer neck

I sponged the neck green and used ivy leaves to print leaf images. The antlers were given a light dusting of silver, to catch the light. A brown heart for the nose and simple, soft eyes painted on. (It reminds me of a lovely walk we once had, where a herd of deer walked with us.)

I’ll make a wreath of lavender and add felted leaves to it and the head will be mounted on the wall. Just in the perfect place, so that it seems to be poking it’s head through a hedge.

Sometimes less just says more.

(Although I am still hankering after the carrara marble effect. A marble deer head just appeals. Maybe I’ll repaint it in a few years time!)

  1. I Love, love, love this and think it is perfect just as it is.
The eyes are beautiful, you’re so clever getting them to look so soft, eyes are quite difficult to get right I think.

  2. I love this! And Briony is right, the eyes are beautiful and really make it special.
It’s been fun catching up with you again! Gosh I wish I lived near the Mendip hills, such pretty views and fantastic for kite flying. Suffolk is as flat as a pancake!
Looks like you are enjoying the summer, long may it last xx

    1. Good to see you back, Liz! We are so lucky to live where we do. Easy reach to lots of fun places. Just need more time…….

    1. Preferred the idea of the deer poking its head through in an uncharacteristic curious way, rather than having it chopped off and mounted on the wall. I know its only papier mache, but……….
