What would have happened in the Civil War if Twitter had existed, the children pondered?
“Let’s take over Parliament because YOLO”
“Ransacking castle. LOL”
“Family in castle on run. Silver from castle on sale in market. #Bargain”
“Long live the King! IMHO”
“King wore 2 shirts to execution. Looked dapper. Well, YODO”
Who knows how different it would have been. Maybe more of the castles would be standing. Maybe more people would have survived. Maybe.
Our visit to Sherborne Old Castle prompted some interesting questions from the children.ย The castle is a ruin now. Cromwell’s forces started the demise. Raleigh attempted to rebuild, but it proved a bigger task, so he built the new castle. Leaving this one to decay.
We walked around the now-dry moat. A lovely nature reserve. Catching glimpses of banded demoiselle damselflies that flitted in front of us. Enjoyed our picnic, discussing the thickness of the remaining walls.
The sun was out. The children could run around. It reminded me of ruins that I used to run around in Italy, when I was their age. Childhood memories in the making.
If you have any (child friendly) Twitter suggestions along the same theme, we’d love to read them.

This is my entry to the Center Parcs and Tots100 Mayย challenge. If Iโm chosen, I would like to visit (Longleat Forest). We just love getting out and about, spotting nature.
What a fantastic place to visit! And lovely weather for it ๐ #countrykids
It was lovely weather. Can I book more!
WOW .. what a stunning place! and i am sure a picnic here was fantastic xx
Glad we took a picnic. It did make a stunning backdrop.
Oh my this certainly brought back childhood memories – or I should say teen memories – as visited here often during my five years at Sherborne Girl school!!!!!
What a lovely place to be. I can imagine that it does bring back memories. Hopefully all good. ๐
Wow, beautiful! I love old ruins, there is something so fascinating, if haunting, about them. Love the tweets, although am I showing my age when I say that I don’t know what all the acronyms meant…YOLO, YODO!?!
It shows that you are not old enough to have children that are getting to grips with txt talk. You only live once (YOLO) and, the slightly more macabre, but would fit with the times, you only die once (YODO) Probably a sign of too much exposure to Horrible Histories. ๐
I love ruined castles and this looks like the perfect one to visit. It’s great fun imagining what might have happened there in years gone by. #countrykids
…and what might have been. ๐
Looks like an amazing place to explore. I need to find similar ruins near us to take N as I’m sure he’d enjoy it, and imagining he was a knight
My children seem to be adopting the archer role recently, rather than the sword wielding knight. Not sure why the change. (think I prefer it)
What a fab looking old castle! It looks like a great place to explore. Lovely photo’s! #CountryKids

Love these photo and was chuckling at the tweets! Xx #countrykids
They did have fun. ๐ ๐
Stunning! great for sparking the imagination
Hints to the history are a great starting place for a child’s imagination. Grown-ups included! ๐
Looks gorgeous. I love your last photo x

The Mayfly was kind enough to keep still for me, long enough for a photo. Then it was off.
What fabulous photos! I love the way you’ve blurred the edges to make them blend into the white background. This looks like a top day out. I’m such a sucker for a romantic ruin. Thanks for sharing, Bonny
One of my favourite kind of outings as it combines history with nature.
