Seasons come and seasons go. Family traditions are honoured. Today was pumpkin choosing day.
Each year, we visit a farm shop, near my parents, to pick up three pumpkins for carving*. Each year, one of the children tries to persuade me thatย the biggest pumpkin on the trailer should come home with us. Hmm. I know who would end up scooping out that one, so we leave it for someone else.
There are several trailers worth of pumpkins to choose from, tractors to admire and farm cats with their kittens to stroke, but eventually we come away with our three, reasonably sized pumpkins (and an acorn squash for me). Wish all shopping trips were like this. Outdoor shopping at its best.
*(Pumpkins are not just destined for carving. The flesh will be used for stews, etc. for the winter.)

Those pumpkins are massive! Seriously wondering how long it would take to hollow out one of the giant ones, let alone carve it! Looks like your farm shop have it sorted. Curious to know which recipes you use for the pumpkin flesh? I’ve never really done much with mine.
I’m not sure I’d want to even contemplate scooping the giant ones out. With this sort of pumpkin I tend to use onions and spices as the flesh tastes a bit peppery. Also make splat cakes, with cinnamon, and some ends up in stews. Nothing goes to waste.
Now those might just be the biggest pumpkins i have ever seen! I wouldn’t fancy trying to lift one down but as you say what a fun way to do your shopping. I hope you will share your carved pumpkin next week too.
No. I don’t think I’d want to reach it down either. There are smaller ones in wooden crates, which are easier to handle. I wonder if people use power tools to carve the bigger ones.
There are some serious pumpkins there! We have never done this yet as our two kids are still quite young. (plus I don’t think I would be any good at doing it!) Maybe I can convince hubby to do it!!.x #countrykids
It’s not that hard and it doesn’t have to be perfect. At the end of the day, they look amazing with the candles in them, which makes it all worth while. My children have only taken over from me in the last few years and I love their ideas (and their energy). Hope you give it a go.
We’ve been a bit disorganised this year, and I only let the boy choose a couple of small pumpkins ๐ haven’t decided whether to carve or just decorate yet! A lovely family tradition x
We’ve never decorated a pumpkin, but I’ve seen lots of fantastic designs. Very tempted to try one year.
I love family traditions such as this. We’re away on holiday this year so will miss pumpkin carving time but both my kids did it at scouts/cubs this week so at least they’re happy. We like to save and toast the pumpkin seeds in oil & seasoning – the kids love them. #countrykids
Keep burning my pumpkin seeds when I roast them. Just occasionally I get it right!
Love pumpkin farms, even though I haven’t visited one yet! We’re going away for a holiday over Halloween week so I decided not to decorate pumpkins. But now I’m wondering whether we still should? Maybe just one. Love your photos! #countrykids.
Give in. Go decorate a pumpkin.
I wouldn’t be able to resist the huge pumpkin, i’d have to buy it! ๐ #countrykids
Plenty at this farm shop!
Wow those pumpkins are huge! Looks much more fun choosing a pumpkin from a farm shop than from a supermarket ๐
Farm shops seem to have a bigger range of sizes and shapes. We did find one with an interesting shape. Made the children chortle.
Great photos. Nice to have such a tradition
We picked up our pumpkin today for the first time not from a supermarket, but from the field. Great fun choosing, but damn the bag broke. Sign of amateurs unlike others who had taken bags, trolleys, buggies etc to carry theirs.
I can see a new family tradition being born!
My favourite time of year, I love Autumn! I love pumpkins… great photo and I want a tradition like that in our house. Mental note for next year ๐
I love all the family traditions that we have now. Some of them totally unplanned but firm favourites. Pumpkin day could not be missed out.
we went out to chose our pumpkins on saturday too!! how fun to think we were doing the same activity, unbeknownst to each other and separated by an ocean!
Ha! That is a fun thought. Hope you enjoyed your pumpkin day!
My idea of heaven, all those pumpkins. I’d be driving that trailer straight to my house and have them all outside the front like a huge pumpkin patch. I’m rather addicted to them ๐ณ
There was certainly a good choice of trailers…..although I’m not encouraging you! ๐ฎ
