As I type this post, it’s raining. Great weather for slugs, great weather for ducks. Great water-butt filling weather, but not the most inviting weather to encourage the children to go outdoors after a day at school. So when the sun does shine, or even when the rain just stops, we make the most of it and go out and play.Last Sunday, the sun did indeed shine. We headed down to Ramscombe Great Wood, near Bridgewater. It’s managed by the Forestry Commission and a great place to spend a day.
We decided to take a walk among the trees first. Following one of the marked walks, along a track, until we couldn’t resist heading up a less well-travelled path. We followed the ditch surrounding the forest, marking the ancient boundary. It made a good walk.
Back near the car, we checked out the recreation area. There are b-b-q and picnic benches which would be wonderful to use another time. When we arrived, there were a couple of families enjoying outside get-togethers. One party was so organized. They even had set up a garden pergola.
For the children, the real draw was…….
…..the stream. They could not wait to build a dam in the stream. We tried playing pooh sticks from the bridge but it was not quite deep enough to play. The children walked along the stream. Exploring.
I suspect that we could have spent all our time in this stream.
A walk among the trees always lifts the spirits and our Sunday outing was no exception. I love seeing the children work well together and there is no denying it, but this happens best when they are outdoors. Who can blame them.
We may need waterproofs and wellies this weekend, but as sure as eggs are eggs, we’ll find some time to go out and play.

We’ve had a lot of wind and rain this week too, but it’s great to get out in between the down pours. That looks like a really great forest, I love the picture of your son standing in the trees.
It is a lovely forest. We’ll definitely be back. Probably with a picnic and a flask of hot chocolate! 🙂
Looks like a wonderful forest, beautiful. I love the photos of them playing in the stream – that was one of my favourite pastimes when I was that age 🙂
It’s so good to find a forest with great facilities. (There were even loos!) The stream was perfect for a bit of dam building.
Building a dam is one of the 50things we have yet to do.
Looks like a great place and they had lots of fun.
I’m not surprised dam building is a difficult one to complete. Finding the right sort of stream is challenging. We haven’t been doing the 50things, but middling’s teacher has now set it as homework.
we are on waterproof mission this week really for the wet weather x
It’s that time of year! Mud season is just around the corner. Waterproofs make it more fun. 😀
Ohh I need to go and find a stream shallow enough for the kids to do this, looks fabulous. Mich x
It is good fun. Much easier when it is shallow! 🙂
Who can blame them for wanting to stay there and play, it’s a wonderful place to explore. You could quite easily spend a whole day there with either a picnic or a bbq. Thanks for sharing your outdoor adventures with Country Kids.
Absolutely. I think I’m rediscovering how much the children like to stay on one spot and explore. A picnic and a flask of chocolate would be good next time.
How lovely for them to build a dam. Perfect entertainment for young kids!
It is great entertainment. They could have played for hours. 🙂
What a lovely day! My kids had lots of fun damming up a stream on the beach this summer, it’s amazing how hard they concentrated to make the perfect construction!
I know exactly what you mean. For a temporary structure, a lot of thought went into their dam. Wonderful to see.
beautiful photos of a wonderful outing!!
thanks for sharing!
Oh Melissa, thank you. It is a beautiful place. Hoping to go back when the leaves change.
That looks like loads of fun.
Great pics 🙂
Thanks Karen. It was fun.
What a fab time you all had! I love the photo of your son standing in the trees looking out. Its a great photo, very moody.
Looks like they made a very good dam 🙂 Good team work!
Thanks, Sonia. I like that photo too. 🙂
Oh it makes me miss walks in the countryside back in the UK!!

So many wonderful places to walk – on both sides of the Pond. 🙂
