It was a lovely day today, so we reclaimed the garden. The children seemed to spend most of the time turning stones over and generally looking for mini beasts. They found this one in their playhouse.
It really was very long. The children were fascinated by it, but I did persuade them that it would be happier in the wooded area, just outside our garden (the wood below is Black Rock, not our wood).
Later in the afternoon, we headed off to Black Rock at the top of the Cheddar Gorge. This is a favourite walk. The wild garlic is in full glory. We spotted nuthatches, moving among the branches of the tree canopy. One moved all along a long branch upside down, as if it was us who were upside down.
The main attraction for AJ is scrambling up the slopes. She is like a mountain goat.
TF doesn’t have walking boots yet and his wellies would slip, so he stayed near the bottom with me.
As the children get older, we can walk further along. We made it to Velvet Bottom which is a nature reserve. There were beautiful blue butterflies, which would not stay still long enough for me to photograph, and another snail for my photo collection.
My god…that is one helluva slug!!! Semi enchanting…semi terrifying!!!!!

Even the children held back holding this slug in their hands. When they found him, the slug had made itself as small as it could. About 1.5″ long, but hunched. We were all surprised by the length of it.
Fantastic scenery we have nothing like that near here. Thanks for the crochet link, it would be great if you could email the pattern you are using, my book doesn’t have a pattern for a circle in a square. Huge slug!
Its no wonder our slow worms look content.
