Playing catchup with Kid’s clothes week yesterday, after my slow start. I gave myself a bit of a challenge. I fell in love with poppy fabric intended for a quilt. Something about it shouted out tunic rather than patchwork. From the middle, the fabric starts with a poppy field in the distance and by the selvedges, the poppies are close up. I think this is the most challenging pattern repeat, I have ever undertaken.
Added to that, I bought the fabric as a bundle with no idea if it would be enough fabric.
I dropped the collar to save fabric and changed the length. I wriggled and fiddled with the fabric until I could fit all the paper pattern on to it, without losing the effect of the poppies. This must have taken about an hour.
Cutting and tacks complete. Last night, I spent a couple of hours making the bodice. Sleeves in and all seams tidy.
When the children came down for breakfast, I couldn’t resist mocking it up, so they could see the effect. I’m pleased with the flow of the pattern. The perfectionist in me wishes that the sleeves were from part of the fabric with smaller poppies, but I’ll go with it for now. I might be surprised.
Not much more to do. I should finish it tonight. The original challenge is to spend just one hour a day sewing clothes for the children. I make that 3 hours, at least, so I’m almost back on schedule.
It really is not the easiest fabric to photograph, but I think the layout will work. Ah well. The proof is in the pudding, as they say! Anyone else joining in?
oh wow!
it’s looking good!!
I couldn’t resist the challenge. 🙂
That material looks really pretty. It makes you feel like summer is coming. Lovely and bright
I love poppies and, you’re right, it is a good summery fabric. Roll on those sunny days.
