Frosted garden

I’m a day late posting this one. We have had heavy frost for a few days in a row. Not unusual for the time of year. The difference this year is that it has not thawed during the day. The temperature has stayed below freezing point day and night.

Each day’s frost is added to the previous day’s. The result is that every surface is covered in beautiful long spikes. It looks like something out of a fairytale book. The Ice Queen could sweep round the corner at any moment and not look out of place.

It is fragile and started to thaw today as we briefly went above freezing. Everyone I met, commented about how beautiful it was.

The trees were thickly covered with frost. I drove up to the Mendips, which is exposed and colder. The trees there were white, as if covered with snow, but the roads were clear, apart from an icing sugar sprinkling which had fallen from the trees. I wish I had taken my camera.

While most of the country is dealing with snow, I think we are lucky to be enjoying Jack Frost’s handiwork.

    1. I’m sure you about winter balancing it out. Its just a question of us looking for it. I was pleased that people talked about how beautiful it was and not so much about the cold.

  1. Just GORGEOUS and magical.

I leave our plants standing even when winter arrives, for the wildlife yes, but also for the beautiful art it becomes once covered with ice and snow!

    happy day!

    1. I’ve not thought of leaving the plants for the aesthetic value, but you are right. We too don’t tidy up the garden in Autumn, so that the bugs and other creatures have somewhere to overwinter. Now I’m going to have a fresh appreciation of the winter garden, when I look out.

    1. There is a real fairytale feel to the landscape. It seems to have lifted people’s spirits. Probably helps that our roads are clear unlike the Northern regions.

  2. Wow! I have never in my life seen frost like that. How beautiful. I’m so glad for people like you who can appreciate it and share. Thanks xo

    1. I’m with you on this one. I can’t remember seeing the frost build up like it has this week. It has thawed now, but it added a bit of magic to the day while it lasted. Very happy to share.

  3. That rose is stunning – we have had frost here too but it has built up in thick crystals like diamonds – I love your long thorns of ice, you are right it is very fairy tale and very beautiful! xx

    1. I’m fascinated that we got spikes while your frost turned into diamonds. I’m sure someone somewhere will know the reason. The build up of frost is so pretty. I hope you are able to enjoy your landscape.
