We’ve done duck racing. We’ve done snail racing. Today we did fish racing, because life is not zany enough!
Idea and template from Made by Joel. Printed out a fish for each child. The children coloured and cut them out. I positioned strategic pieces of sellotape, so the front half of the fish was closed to create a pouch. Ready to catch their breaths. Also a straw in the fold for the thread to be threaded through. (A good game in itself!)
Three parallel threads were strung across our sitting room, so that it resembled a series of laser beam triggers guarding treasure. A different height for each child. Finally a fish was threaded on to each thread.
The children spent the next half an hour blowing the fish along the threads. Racing each other. They found blowing through the straws gave them an advantage. They debated how they could improve the fish and the blowing method. Some wonderful elaborate ideas. We chatted about different forces acting on the fish. Such a good opportunity to go over a little bit of science!
There have been moans and groans, as we could not leave the threads up. (Hmm, amazing how three threads can take over a room) I’ve promised that they can make the fish into a mobile. It looked very strange seeing the fish seemingly suspended mid-air in the room.
We are enjoying all the paper craft, at the moment. Only a few more days until they are back at school and so much more crafting and learning to fit in.
Go on. You know you want to try it now!
We have done this but made it rockets or planes. Racing fish is a different idea.
After watching three fish whizzing up and down the room, I think rockets and planes probably make more sense. Very surreal to see them suspended in mid air.
This looks like such so much fun and if my girls were little I would be doing this with them. I think it would make a great party game too.
Happy Easter to you and your family.

Having three strings set up, it did cross my mind that it would make a good party game. Not just for children! 😀 Have a good Easter!
awwww what a cute idea ;-)) dee x
It did entertain them for longer than I imagined, which is always a bonus!
totally love the second snap..it says it all 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
She was so good to stop long enough for me to take a photograph. I have a lot of blurry fish photos. Or even worse, a single thread 😀
what a great idea!
You are so making me wish I had little ones again, then again, I think the girls and I could still enjoy a bit of childish fun!
Blessings, Debbie
This rocks!
What a fab idea, and just by coincidence we made fish print bags today.
I think tomorrow we may follow up with fish racing 😀
Hmm, I feel a fish themed week coming on.
try turtle racing 😈
This is great. It looks like so much fun!
I think I might have to pinch this idea (hope you don’t mind), my kids would love it!
Thanks for linking #LetKidsBeKids
Simple idea, but so much fun. Hope your children enjoy it. 😀
What a really fantastic idea!
It could be almost any shape. There is something a little surreal about a fish, mid air, racing through the room!
What a great idea – must remember this one!
It works well on a rainy afternoon.
