I’ve finished. I’ve finally finished my hexagon patchwork quilt. It has been a long project. I started cutting out and forming these hexagons 17 years ago. Soon after, a house move meant that all the pieces were hidden in a bag and joined my other work-in-progress projects.
Then last year, I finally dug them out again and the sewing began. I wanted to make the quilt totally by hand. It made the perfect project for picking up at odd moments or evenings in front of the fire. Plus it kept my lap warm, which is an advantage in an old house like ours.
The sun shone today. Thank you! This quilt has been my winter project and now it is finished, it feels like I’m ready to let go of Winter and move on to Spring. Plus AJ found a sleepy ladybird woken by the warmer day. What more can I say.
Yes, I think I’m ready to dig out the pots and seeds and get started with my planting. Spring and my kitchen garden are calling. The children spent all day outside and there was even the first bike ride of the year.
Not that it is the end of my patchworking. I’m really happy with the quilt. It is my first ever quilt and I have definitely caught the bug, which is lucky as I still have several hundreds of hexagons waiting to be sewn into something else. I hope it doesn’t take me another 17 years. Hmm. Maybe next winter’s project.

BEAUTIFUL! I love hexagons. And how excellent they do look in your quilt. What a clever girl you are…taking 17 years to finish it. Now you have an instant heirloom – no aging required ;-). Well done!
17 years seems a long time. I like the idea that it is an instant heirloom! 😀
Cheryl it’s amazing, such a lot of work must have gone into sewing this quilt, all that hand stitching……………..I’m sure this beautiful patchwork quilt will be treasured for years to come. Well worth the 17 year wait I’d say. xx
I’m not sure I would have been brave enough to start this project, if I had known just how long it would take. Loved doing all the hand stitching. I will be doing more. Just not yet! 😀
What a beautiful quilt – full of sunshine & warmth! & how wonderful to finish it after so long a gestation period – intensely satisfying I guess. I love the pic with two of your hens admiring your handiwork! As they should!
It may have been a winter project, but I’m with you about the sunshine and warmth. The chickens were starting to peck it and then realised that the flowers were not real. The children thought it was hysterical!
There must be an awful lot of hours work in that.
I have no idea how many hours I have put into this quilt. It was very relaxing to make and I learnt masses. I’m so happy with the results, which is all that matters really. 🙂
What a beautiful work! Wish you much fun and plenty of motivation for your next quilt!!!
Thanks Julia. I’m looking forward to starting the next one.
Wow, finished after 17 years, that is a wonderful end to a winter project! It’s no wonder the sun came out to see it…. 😀
I was pleased to see the sun too!! 😀
Oh Well Done, Seriously… That is impressive and what a glorious day to celebrate it with!!! My mom started a quilt like that when I was a small child, you won’t believe it… but my dad made a special chest in the lounge for her patchwork, and I bet that quilt is still in there… in piles and piles of little cut out hexagons!!! Feels like yesterday!!!
You are going to have to investigate. Its amazing how quickly the years go by and hexagons can hide! So many memories to relive! 😀
I have a not-quite-finished-quilt lurking in a cupboard making me feel guilty…maybe I should just get it out & get it finished like you’ve done! It looks wonderful & it’s well worth the celebration.

I hope you do dig it out and finish your quilt. Such a satisfying feeling when it is finished. Loved joining in with the Making Winter Blog Hop.
Lovely quilt, can imagine the long hours of work that have gone into it, it looks great out in the sunshine! x
I enjoyed doing it by hand, even if it took several times longer. Less intrusive in family life than a sewing machine clattering on!
oh cheryl, it is so beautiful, you must be so proud ! and look at those big healthy chooks ! xxx
Thanks angelina. The chickens are all in fine fettle. Amazing how fast those feathers grow when it gets colder round here.
Wow! The finished article looks great. I gave up thinking I’d get around to making a quilt with some precut hexagons I was given and made flying beanbags instead! A whole quilt was beyond me.
I love your shooting stars. Great idea.
Wow! Congratulations! It looks amazing. I actually remember when you posted about it for the first time and I was impressed that you were picking up a project after 17 years. It must feel fantastic to have acomplished it. Well done.
It has been a looong time coming! Huge satisfaction that I’ve seen such a big project through. 😀
Gorgeous! Really impressive that you finished a project that you started 17 years ago! Thanks so much for sharing on Craft Schooling Sunday!
That is one labor of love! and, its your first quilt?! awesome work! first quilts are always special.. treasure yours in the days to come..
What a beautiful quilt! You’ve inspired me to get think about getting out the patchwork that I have had half done in my sewing basket for 15 years – maybe one day…
Its amazing how many people have half finished quilts hidden away. Until I posted, I thought that I was the only one who took years to finish. Once I picked it up again, I was so determined to finish.
I started a hexagon quilt in December 2010 and am still working on this. Your quilt is beautiful and a great inspiration to me to keep going. Well done!
