Along with tractors and anything with an engine in it, TF loves dinosaurs. Sometimes they are friendly, but other times they are the enemy. He chats about them and is curious why they’re no longer around. I sense he is disappointed.
When I was putting my Christmas making list together, felted dinosaurs for him were one of the first items I came up with. I love it when ideas almost ping into my head. I knew the size and types I wanted to make. With my new found confidence in designing my own shapes, I sat down with paper and pencil, and designed my first dinosaurs.
I toyed (excuse the pun), with the idea of jointed and pipe-cleaner bendy legs, but scrubbed the idea once I thought about the way he would play with them. I kept the design the same, but left out the moving parts, which ultimately makes a more interesting shape. I used 100% wool felt and blanket stitched it all together. This is a blue-throated scelidosaurus stegosaurus.
This does tie up with another project, which I hope to share with you next week.
For the Tricerotops, I used the same design, but altered some features. This time I used old felted jumpers. It gives a more textured skin surface. Maybe more battle scarred. I ran out of white embroidery silk, but I will blanket stitch around the white horns and plate, to make them stand up to rough play.
My darling husband, asked me why I had made two. I put one in his hand and he turned it over and over in his hand to look at it. I gave him the other one and instantly he had them battling each other. Need I say more!
I have plans to make a couple more and probably pair them up with a book from TF’s favourite series of dinosaur books – Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs. What is the betting that the first thing TF does is have them battling with each other.
So how is your Christmas list doing?
Those are Excellent …really Excellent :0) :0) :0) :0)
(Older Daughter says “Sweet…your son will love them”)
Thanks, Val. If he plays with them for at least as long as it took me to make them, then I’ll be pleased. (Thanks Older Daughter, too)
btw
What Christmas List ??????
Runs off to Panic
Oh Val. You crack me up. Its OK. You’ve got over a month.
Oh my goodness, these are the cutest things ever! What blessed kids you have to get to receive such adorable toys homemade by their mama. I’m inspired every time I visit your blog.
Thanks Casey. If he doesn’t go for them, I shall sit them next to my computer and they can roar at difficult clients.
Would you just look at those!!! Totally totally love them… definitely linking those in this weeks Friday faves!!! You are just brilliant!!!
Thank you se7en. I love the way they turned out. Two down, two to go.
adorable.
Thanks Jodi. Its going to be tough wrapping them up!
Those are so wonderful!
Thanks Phyllis. I loved making them.
I love the dinosaurs and I had to laugh at the comment about your husband playing with them. Little boys never grow up. 🙂 Christmas list is going well. Enthusiasm dwindling. 🙁 Oh so tired and no energy.
Have a great day,
Anne xx
Thanks Anne. I’m hoping that its a case of father like son. I’m sure it is! I find the children are fun to organise presents for. The grown-ups on the list are another story. Hope enthusiasm picks up for you.
The dinosaurs are fantastic and I’m sure the first thing TF does is have them fight each other!
Christmas list isn’t going too badly, I’m glad to say.
Thanks Sue. I think you are right. I’m quite sure there will be plenty of roaring and neither dinosaur will back down. I’m glad I’ve still got over a month to go, as far as the Christmas list is concerned.
