Dear Daughter. About helping

attic window, economy and prairie queen quilt blocks

Dear Daughter

Hi. Yes, I’m back with a slightly different format of a letter this time. I’m going to include three patchwork blocks for your Dear Daughter quilt, instead of one. (Attic Window, Prairie Queen and Economy) Also, this is a thank you letter.

Like a lot of bloggers, I use my blog as my happy place. Dancing on tippy-toes through whatever daily life slings my way. A place to share happy thoughts and colourful whims.  Escapism, maybe.  Pointing the camera lens in the direction of the areas of life that make me happy. Definitely. Ignoring the rest. Yes, that too.

Occasionally life imposes itself. Good. Or bad. Like now.

I’m finding it more of a challenge to express the happy thoughts.  Not that I’m completely without the positive spin on life. After all, I am me! It’s just harder. After years of grabbing life and running with it, I’ve been brought down to earth with a thump, and reminded that I need to move down a gear. (images of ambulances, scans, doctors running tests – discovering that I have no superhuman powers.)

This is tough for someone who tends to be always doing something. Even sitting down, I’m seldom without my latest sewing or knitting project. Five minutes are long enough to clear a few weeds in the garden. Right?

If I want to move a table or shovel out tons of compost, I get on and do it, rather than waiting for help. That’s me. Now, I’m paying the price and just thankful to be recuperating. (I love saying that word.) The other options are unthinkable.

The last few weeks, I have really appreciated the help from all of you children. You have taken over roles with such efficiency, it has taken my breath away. I’ve noticed that the jobs you have chosen as your own, have played on your strengths.

The organizers among you, have organized. (who else could have kept focused and packed bags for herself and two siblings, ready to stay with grandparents, in fifteen minutes flat?)

The completers have seen jobs through. (who else could ensure the dishwasher is always empty, and the salad bowl prepared?)

The competitive ones have beaten personal bests in their approach to doing all their jobs. (who else could fetch items in less than 5 seconds, and chop onions without losing any of their finger tips? Not one!)

None of you have asked for rewards. You have all wanted to do your bit. Each of you have showered me with hugs.

I am truly thankful for all your help. A very big thank you to you all. I’m grateful.

As ever

Your loving mother

P.S. Why three patchwork blocks this time? Somethings never change. If I’m sitting around, I may as well be stitching! I’ll sneak in a fourth, just because I can….(Practical Orchard- photo above). That makes 11 blocks complete.

  1. What a beautiful and moving post, Cheryl. I am so glad that you are now recuperating. Actually, I think you do have a super power: your amazing family!
PS Lovely quilt squares. Hard to pick a favourite there. 🙂

  2. I’m sorry to hear you have been ill. It can be hard to take a step back when you are ‘doer’. Your family sound like they are a wonderful support. Slow down and sew while they help around the house. Take care xx
