Day out at the Museum

Today we went to Oxford. To visit the Pitt Rivers Museum. Just amazing.

So much to look at. Seriously, this museum is stuffed full of so many interesting artifacts. An absolute goldmine, if we were researching a particular project. My photos do not do it justice.

Today we just looked. And pointed.

And discovering.

And pointed. There was a lot of pointing. And just a bit of over-acting.

Fans of Philip Pullman might remember this museum from his Dark Materials Trilogy. We saw items that must have inspired him.

The tree exhibits are part of an exhibition called the Ghost Forest.

Couldn’t resist showing the children a little bit of the University of Oxford. No harm to inspire. We didn’t dare tell our book-mad eldest that we were walking among the buildings that make up the Bodleian library.

We all loved our visit. On the way home, the children talked and talked about everything they had seen. A definite recommendation from them.

We will be coming back. There is so much more to see at the Museum and the colleges …… and Oxford.

    1. Its free as well. Really is a great place to spend time. So much to see and learn. Some objects have the most beautiful little writing on them, describing what they are. Just amazing.

  2. Oh the awesomeness of a real museum packed with artifacts!!! We are going to have to visit!!! I love your trip to the museum… so much to see!!! Wonderful!!! Hope you are having a fun weekend!!!

    1. You will need more than one day. We just scraped the surface. I think your children would love it. Floor to ceiling displays. Whereever you look, there is something to see. The building is worth seeing too.

  3. I love (love) that museum, and I miss Oxford so much. If only I could live in 15 places at once…
And quite frankly your photos are brilliant. The line of skeletons captures the incredible expanse of some of the displays perfectly.

I miss Oxford (and about a million other places, but tonight I will go to sleep dreaming of Oxford).

    1. I was trying to persuade my husband that we could move. Oxford really is a beautiful place with so many interesting things going on. I love the light in the first room of the museum (glass roof). There is so much there. We only discovered all the drawers to open, half way round. I know where I would spend my lunch times if I worked in central Oxford.
