It pretty much rained all day. The children wanted to spend their first proper day off school playing at home. They spent time playing together with the marble run, the farm set and the train set. They dressed up and, on the whole, played nicely together. They even put them all away afterwards. I didn’t have to pick up a single piece. They painted and read. Made dens. We haven’t had an indoor day for a while. It was a nice change.
They were so occupied, that I found time to practise my new found skill. I want to make an afghan blanket. I dug out my Grandmother’s Busy Needles magazine from 1979. Very seventies. It has a section on different squares to crochet.
So I quickly taught myself how to treble crochet.
I love the daisy square, but I figured it wasn’t for the first timer.
I love the shape of the slipper.
I decided I would try the Pinwheel square. After a few false starts, I got the hang of it and I felt the rhythm of crocheting. It wasn’t until I reached the last round that I realised that I cannot count to eight reliably. Seven spikes do not easily turn into a square. The girls are thrilled with the new rug for their doll’s house. BL, at five years old, has promised to teach me to count. There is hope then.
I could never master crochet-ing…it’s on my bucket list though…I WILL do it someday, (after spinning, and knitting a sweater)!!!
If you are really interested in doing a doll for toadstool exchange, (however, I realize that with 3 children you may not have the time), I would be so open to it…I’m actually working on a Toadstool house for Ruby’s birthday, (I’ll post pics on Thurs or Fri)…I could whip up one of those for you! I’m at valleyvixen@mail.com
Happy crafting!
Maureen!!
Spinning is next on my list. Think my email must have gone astray, so I’ve just emailed you through another route..let me know if it reaches you. I wasn’t ignoring you, honest!
I’m still waiting to learn to spell.
Me too.
“They were so occupied”… I am patiently waiting to say that!
I have to wait until they are asleep before my craft box comes out…I did some sewing yesterday with my 6 month on my lap and 3 year hovering…I put it away after a minute!
Crocheting is really relaxing xx
I know what you mean. I have always wanted them to see things being made, but there are too many interesting bits and pieces in the sewing box.
I thought I had learned how to crochet… I was working on a very small doll blanket, and couldn’t get my lines straight. After a loooong story.. it turns out it wasn’t even crochet. It was some strange knot tying with a crochet needle that I invented. I was so screwed up that I gave up on the whole thing.
I plan on approaching crochet in a few years. Your square is lovely!
I hope you gave the technique a good name. Its taken me several attempts to learn, with long gaps inbetween.
I see what you mean about having the same idea. That daisy square is lovely, it jumps out at you doesn’t it. I like the pattern you are using it looks similar to the one Dawn is using. Any idea where I could find a pattern for it? Oh, good luck with the counting lessons.
I had bookmarked this one http://meetmeatmikes.blogspot.com/2010/01/crochet-school-lesson-one-how-to-make.html, but forgot about it until now. If you like I can email over the one I’m using. Let me know. This could turn into an unofficial craft along!
In the magazine they had made the daisy square into an egg cosy! Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a good enough photo last night.
I love all those patterns what a lovely hand me down! Are you going to have a go at the slippers? They look like they could be fantastic! 😀
I’ve done a knitted version of these before. I think the crochet slipper shape must have been stylised, to achieve the pronounced instep. Saying that maybe this winter….
u guys r amazing! I’m doing the sqs slippers for donating 2 a home in Rwanda. Thx!
I’m so glad you have made the slippers. I’m sure they were gratefully received.
[…] The original inspiration, thanks to Time to Craft […]
I found your page via pinterest whilst searching for crocheted slipper ideas. Do you have instruction for these slippers that you may share with me? Excited to learn to make these.
Unfortunately, the pattern is from a magazine, so it is not mine to share. I think I saw something similar on Ravelry, if that helps.
