When we moved into our house 18 years ago, we were heartened to find that someone, many years before, had planted trees. There was oak, beech, holly, spruce and hawthorn, although I suspect the birds planted the latter. There was also a yew tree. Still is. In fact they are all still there except the spruce, which had the misfortune to be planted next to the electricity cables.
When I was a child, I used to disappear into the woods for hours with a group of friends. There was a small cluster of yew trees that we’d head to every time. The branches of these trees were perfect for climbing and hanging out in. It was our club house. We thought it was our secret place. As children do.
To find a yew tree in our new garden, seemed like a good sign of times to come. Brought back those lovely, carefree memories. I haven’t climbed our yew tree. My children do. I have a bench underneath it where I can sit and see most of the garden. Making it a good place to just hang out.

An aside: One of my favourite jokes, which make the children groan each time I say it.
Q. Why do you find yew trees growing outside churches?
A. Because they can’t grow inside.

Β And on that note…linking up for #AlphabetPhoto with my Y is yew tree.
…groan! But a great Y and a lovely place to sit.
The one place I can see almost all the garden.
Haha, very funny and a fab Y #alphabetphoto xx
Thanks π
That’s a lovely story, and a beautiful photo!

Nice photo. Love the reds against the green! And I am going to keep the joke for when the need arise =P #alphabetphoto
Best said with a straight face. As if you’re about to tell them a fact. π
Sounds like a lovely garden. Trees really can be magical can’t they? We had a weeping willow in our garden when I was growing up, I used to love hiding away inside it and whenever I see one now the memories come flooding back x
We had a weeping willow in the middle of our courtyard. Used to love riding my bike through the curtain of branches and leaves.
It must be lovely to have a tree that brings back such lovely memories for you, I love the idea of you having a bench under it x
Great joke! We chose the same for Y!
What a great story and the perfect choice for ‘Y’!
