AlphabetPhoto: N is for nametapes

nametape kitIt’s that time of year again. New school uniform is 85% organized. Old uniform is in a pile waiting to have nametapes removed, with the unpicker at the ready. Three clutches of nametapes are waiting by the needle and thread. It’s time to sew on the nametapes.

I have always preferred the sewn-in nametape version, rather than the iron-on type. It helps that I like to sew, but I also like recycling the old tapes. Some may have been sewn into many garments, over the years, and are still going strong. When we no longer need the garment, it can be passed on with no reference to the last owner.

This is my nametape kit. It sits up in my bedroom by the old rocking chair. I like to steal an odd few minutes to stitch a few more labels in. Avoids a marathon session at the end of the holidays. Plus it is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle elsewhere in the house.

(When push comes to shove I will use a permanent pen. I have a red Sharpie attached to my house keys, which I have even been known to use in the playground to mark clothing that have somehow slipped through!)

  1. I’ve been thinking of stitching name-plates on my daughter’s school uniform too. Have yet to buy them though! #alphabetphoto.

  2. I salute how organised you are. I’m in denial about school starting again in a few short weeks. One day in very early September I know that I’m going to be busy with my needle and thread. All the best, Bonny

  3. This made me smile and prompted memories of when my mum used to sew name labels in our clothes, then we got old enough to do it ourselves 🙂

  4. When I first saw the picture my first thought was ‘Oh dear it’s that time of year again” so it made me laugh when I read you first line! I agree sew in are so much better than iron on, they always fall off eventually!

    1. I’ve never used iron on. Interesting to know that they do fall off. Makes my August ritual of sewing in, even more worthwhile! 🙂

  5. We don’t have school uniform here, so it’s not such an issue, but I do mark jackets and hoodies – the things that get left in the playground! #Alphabetphoto

    1. Have to admit, I love sewing them on. Not one long session, but a few at a time. Actually manage to finish something!

  6. Love that you still do it the old fashioned way – I’m afraid I’m very lazy when it comes to naming and opt for iron on or a stamper! I really have to get my son organised for going back to school, I’ve been trying to put it to the back of my mind but time is coming on now!
