After school celebration snack

Candlemas cakes (Pinterest inspiration). Sprouting shoots pushing through the warming earth.

Reminds me of the seedling trays each Spring. Full of promise.

(Chocolate cake, with chocolate chips for stones. Fondant icing coloured green.)

After school, the children had fun decorating the cakes. I love the rainbow sun and the flowers that are starting to bud.

Little brother decided that bulbs sprouting through snow would be more interesting. Maybe he’s hoping for snow.

While they drank their hot muddy drink (hot chocolate) and stirred it with woodland fungi (marshmallow on a wafer stick), I read The Story of the Root Children. It’s been a while since we last read this book. The illustrations are just as much a conversation starter as ever.

(My search for an alternative to plastic straws may be over. Thanks to AJ.)

Lots to look forward to. Including more Candlemas (adding in –  Imbolc) activities tomorrow.

Happy February

  1. I don’t know if I should tell you this …but a candy cane will act as a straw …..
My youngest discovered this …now I just have to hope she doesn’t spot the wafers in your post …lol

    1. I love seeing all the seedlings coming up each Spring. The novelty never wears off. These ones have the added bonus that we can eat them straight away. D

    1. Our daffodils leaves are up and I’m just waiting for the buds to swell. The snowdrops have been flowering a few weeks. The cakes are really easy and not too much sweet, sweet icing. Hope you enjoy your cakes.

  2. I love your celebration cakes, they look delicious but I love the springness of them most – fab idea

Definitely feeling springy today in sunny Somerset, so much so I have dragged the Hoover and dusters for a good old blitz!

    1. We were going for a bulb sprouting look. The original pin had spreading leaves. Our part of Somerset is not quite at that stage yet. Love the sun, but it does remind me that I need dust!
