In another reality, I have a tea shop. My counters are lined with cake stands, featuring glass domes covering the most amazing cakes. The sort of cakes that people travel half way across the county to try. Magazine journalists rave about in their columns. And there will be flowers. Lots of beautiful flowers. Scenting the tea room with a wonderful floral scent. Sigh.
Meanwhile, back in this reality, I am one cake stand nearer to matching this vision. With my family acting as perfect stand-ins for the other reality’s journalists and travellers. Always happy to help when it comes to sampling the cakes I bake.
So yes. It’s happened. I’ve reached a point in my life, when I think a glass dome might just survive in our household.
When the children are less likely to grab and drop. When the dogs are less likely to knock it flying. When the house renovations are slowing down. Yes, now is a good time for a cake stand with a glass dome.
Being me, I couldn’t quite leave it as it was. The metal fret work was calling out for decoration. Listen. Can you hear it? Add colour. Add ribbon. I can change the colour, depending on the theme of a celebration. Don’t get me wrong. I love the simplicity of the white, but its always nice to ring the changes.
Seasonal flowers that happen to compliment the ribbon colour, would help to make it quite a centre piece for a tea party.
I may not live up to my other reality self, but that’s OK. I’m quite happy with my victoria sponge. And so are the rest of the family. Oh, I should share my secret for making the most yummy cake in this reality. I could say it is the teaspoon or two of vanilla essence I add, that fools some people into thinking the cake is shop bought (from an upmarket patisserie, of course. Well, I think that’s what they mean…..).
No. The truth is that I am on first name terms with the hens that lay the eggs. Georgina and Foxglove. It makes all the difference. I wonder if my other reality self can claim the same!
Details: the cake stand, with dome, and ribbons are available from Country Baskets. A little while ago, I won a competition to make an Easter wreath. Oh yes! The prize was a voucher to spend with them. A really good excuse to indulge.
This made me laugh – I have always coveted a cake stand but haven’t’, yet, felt it fits our lifestyle…..maybe that day will come! Your Victoria sponge looks delicious – one of my favourites! Juliex
It has taken me many years to reach this point. If nothing else, I hope I give you hope. One day, you too. 😉
beautiful!
i would definitely come to your tea shop!
I’ll reserve you a place. 🙂
Lovely and practical too ….a bit less practical for me as my Mister (bless his cotton socks) can’t resist temptation …so it would be a bit cruel..which is a shame as it looks lovely and would keep off the stray insect and cat with ambitions…
It also keeps the cake lovely and fresh. Cake doesn’t last very long in our household. Having it on show means that last piece is finished. The piece that everyone politely leaves for others and then is found stale in the cupboard a few days later. This way it is eaten, rather than being a nasty surprise. Cats with ambition! 😀 😀 Like it!
Utterly stunning, I also run a recipe linky #tastytuesdays if you’d like to link there too. Thanks for linking up to #brilliantblogposts x
Thanks! 🙂 I’ll check it out.
