The blackcurrants are ready to pick. We have 10 or so mature blackcurrant bushes. Picking them is not a quick business. As I spent time picking them, today, I could appreciate why commercially blackcurrants are harvested mechanically. If I costed out my time and applied the minimum wage, then the little packets that are in the shops, would cost a whole lot more.
I picked almost 4 lbs of blackcurrants today. A few bushes down from where I was picking, there was a blackbird helping himself. Not sure how much he had. I use our harvest each year to make blackcurrant jelly, blackcurrant sauce and blackcurrant juice. I’d love to know what well loved recipes other people use.
Not finished yet. I’ve got a whole lot more picking to do tomorrow and probably the next day too!
gosh they look lovely and very yummy!
The children (and blackbirds) eat them straight from the bushes, which I find too sharp. I can enjoy the taste more when they are cooked and sweetened. Then they are definitely yummy!
Sounds like you need to bake the blackbird into a pie to set before the king! Well done on your patience with picking all those currants! Your garden is producing some gorgeous things!! I am getting garden envy…
Hee hee! I wonder if the blackbird would taste of blackcurrants and raspberries. I think I will give it a miss, as they do sing so sweetly.
Hmm, yummy. Here we have been indulging in wild rapsberries!
Our raspberries are giving about a couple of handfuls a day at the moment. Yum.
