One Happy Bunny

This week, we needed one rabbit outfit for school. As last week was such a busy week, I left this to the very last moment. (Please tell me that I’m not the only one who is most creative and innovative at the eleventh hour?)

Fortunately, I have a few white t-shirts awaiting appliqued images and a quick dash to the shops resulted in a pair of white leggings. I added a ball of fleece at the back for a tail.

So far so good.

I was told that school was making the ears, but I suggested that I would make a rabbit mask. She has to say some lines, so I needed to keep her mouth clear. I selected white merino and needle felted it into a non-tickly base. I used the corner of my needlefelting sponge to create a dome shape to go over the wearer’s nose. Then pink and brown merino to add the details. The ends of the whiskers are loose so they can be rearranged during play. I imagine them being twirled around her finger as she talks.

One happy bunny.

Except it turns out that, as we walked into school today, costume ready for the dress rehearsal, that ears were not being made by school.

Happy bunny now turns into an earless bunny.

Hmm. Opportunity for more crafting. With the promise of ears before the performance tomorrow, bunny skipped into school.

This time I used pipe cleaners, white Jacobs wool and more pink merino. The white wool was wet felted around the pipe cleaners and I needlefelted the pink on to it after the wool had dried. All done! The ears are now secured to a hair band.

After school, the girls had fun bending the ears into different positions and pulling faces into the mirror. Oh, the giggles!

I’m looking forward to seeing the mask and the ears together. I am told that the mask is lovely and cosy to wear. The children have already thought of many more animal masks that they would like me to make. I love the natural feel of these playthings. I think I shall easily be persuaded to make more.

What do you think?

edited: the ears held up perfectly during all the hopping in the performance and passed the bounce test . Phew!

    1. Given the choice of craft foam or wool, I’d choose wool to craft with everytime. If nothing else, wool is easier to recycle in the end! We have a few polyester animal costumes and the children get so clammy in them after a while, that they don’t keep them on for long. I wanted to make them a costume that turns them into a rabbit, without needing a full body cover-up. I think it worked. Time will tell. 😀

    1. Hi Tricia. Always wonderful to welcome new readers! Especially when they leave such kind comments. 😉 Hope you enjoyed your lurk! 😀
