Happy Solstice

This Solstice, the weather was indifferent. Never to be discouraged, we dashed out between rain showers.

There might have been more dancing if I had fixed the headdresses, just a little more. There were plenty of giggles. Let’s face it, if you want to tempt back the sun, nasturtiums have to be a good choice!

The toadlets chose the Solstice to arrive for their annual visit. They are so tiny and so many of them. Their bodies are about 1 cm long. We have to tip-toe out of the back door, in fear of treading on one of them.

The back door has to be kept shut, otherwise they hop straight in. The children have developed a careful technique of relocating them back out into the big wide world. These little toads are surprisingly good climbers.

This evening, as I sat listening to AJ doing her music practise, I noticed a dust bunny (click here for explanation of dust bunny) hopping towards the harp. It inspired AJ to instant poetry. I guess that’s what happens when you are plucking harp strings.

Today, I saw a dust bunny
It hopped across the floor

expect it was no bunny
but a toad come through the door.

(I’m sure she will be polishing the poem a bit more in the morning, but it was so quick and funny I had to share!)

Hoppy…… Happy Solstice to one and all!

edited: Probably should explain that the toadlet had hopped in through the door and headed straight under a cupboard. There it found a dust bunny, which it brought out with it. Got to love those little fellows!

  1. What a sweet post, love the headdress and to have so many frogs is sweet. I don’t know what a dust bunnie is i will check it out 😉 Enjoy your day, dee x

    1. Blessed be the house with no dust bunnies! There is a link in my post to an explanation of dust bunnies and their antics. The toadlets are enjoying our showery weather. Less predators to bother them, under the cover of rain!

  2. Love the nasturtium crown…ours are just getting ready to flower. Fabulous poetry and cute inspiration from the strings. Thanks for dropping by my blog today…would love to see your chain mail sleeves! Oh, and adore Totoro 😀

    1. The nasturtiums self-seeded in the greenhouse from last year. Rather swamping the tomatoes, so I pulled out some to make the crowns. I may have to take more radical action as it hasn’t made more than a dent. The children love eating them, but there are only so much you can eat! 😮 We are big Totoro fans.

  3. Love the headdresses!!! Summer feels good over this side of the Atlantic too. Good luck with the end of the school term. I actually wish the school year here went a bit longer as it is in England. Summer holidays here last a whole three months!!!

  4. The build up to the end of term is already starting. Trips, sports days and performances are starting to fill the calendar. Three months seems a long time. Must be even harder to get back into the swing after such a long spell away.

  5. I love, love toads (and frogs) so I am slightly more than a smidge envious that you have toadlets right outside your door!

    1. They are everywhere in the garden. Our grass is growing so long that the garden is becoming a meadow. No-one can bring themselves to mow it, just in case a toadlet meets a grizzly end. They are so sweet.
