Sunday Photo – The Levels

Beautiful day on the Somerset Levels. Listening to the boom of the bittern and watching marsh harriers and great white egrets. Stopped in our tracks by a black cap who perched on a branch a metre or two away, and sang. Pure joy.

Oh, that’s Glastonbury Tor in the background.

(For April Fools this year, the local council pinned a planning application to the Tor for a mobile phone mast to be put on top of it. Ha! No way!)

    1. Without the drainage systems and pumps it would be an island in a very big lake. Most of the surrounding area is at or below sea level. It used to flood over the winter months and mostly clear in the summer. It’s where the name Somerset originates from – Summer lands.

    1. The Tor refers to the hill, which stands out from the rest of the surrounding area. On the top is St Michael’s tower. It has been a site of religious interest, even before Christianity reached Britain. A popular place for people to visit as part of a pilgrimage or just out of curiosity.
