On my list of places to see in Edinburgh, this summer, was the memorial to Sir Walter Scott. Some people travel far to see the great writer, but we were there to see his beloved deerhound, Maida. I’m glad we made it. I know that look well, after years of having deerhounds.
We had our latest deerhound pup with us in Edinburgh. He did his best to replicate the statue by the steps, but he’s young and easily distracted. Seems a good excuse to go back when he’s a little bit older.

Hi Cheryl, I saw a photo of a dog the other day and could say it was a deerhound with confidence. And that is all thanks to you! I don’t think I’d ever heard of the breed before I started reading your blog. I think that with a little practice and a lot of patience your deerhound pup will be able to be the living statue of Maida.

I hope you were doing something like a pub quiz at the time and it was the deciding question. I was impressed at how Maida the statue was recognizably a deerhound. Breeds change over the years, but she looked just like my old girl I lost last year. I will train the pup daily so next time he adopts just the right position. 😀

I only get to see deerhounds once a year at the St. Paddy’s parade and they mix them in there with Irish Wolfhounds, what a sweet and noble pup. Loving this idea to recreate the statue, lol. Sweet babi!
