Toys for a little boy

Today, we made the most of the holiday and went over to lunch at my parents’ house again. They live near enough that it makes a good day trip, but far enough that it is a novelty for the children. I have a few boxes of childhood toys in their barn that I wanted to sort out.

In one box was a shoe box of old cars, that I remember playing with. TF was thrilled to see them, so they are now his. AJ spent time playing with them as well. Each time she discovered something new about them, she would share it with me. It really brought back memories. TF particularly liked the tractors and spent time pushing them round the table with his Grandpa.

We have never made a big point of buying boys toys for him. After two girls, we have a variety of toys that they all play with. I have noticed that he turns most of these toys into boys toys. For example, a dolls pram has been converted into a mower, which he pushes around the garden making the appropriate noises. At one stage he wore a pink fluffy tiara and declared it as a farmer’s hat, as he rode on his tractor (I do have the photos!). Dolls house furniture becomes screwdrivers, clamps and nails.

He has received toy tractors and cars as presents, but this haul has made his day. I would like to make him a carry bag when I get the time.

The other winner today was a bag of marbles. He walked around most of the afternoon with the bag over his shoulder and the marbles clanking away. Every now and then, he would reach in and pull one out to admire.

He is a boy and no mistake.
