Apple Picking Day

apple cropping 2

There are some days in the year, that I really look forward to. One of those is the day the whole family go out and pick the last of the apples from the trees. Up to that point, the windfalls are plenty enough.

This year’s apple picking day was no exception. It was prompted by the oncoming high winds. Either we picked that day or left it in the laps of the Gods.apple cropping

For the first hour, the sun shone. Everyone joined in filling crates with apples. The long arm cropper helped to reach the apples at the top. As crates were filled, wheel barrows were deployed. Other containers were emptied in order to carry even more apples. Then the rain started. So we carried on. It must have taken a couple more hours.

Ah well. The apples are all in now. Just a question of storing them all. One way or another.

One of my favourite problems.

Hope the children look back fondly at this family tradition in years to come!

  1. Wow those are apple laden trees. Where on earth do you store so many? I have a few windfalls from our 3 year old orchard and that’s all though they made a yummy apple cake today! A lovely family tradition you have there and I dare say one the kids will remember, in fact I’d put money on you doing the same job with grandchildren in years to come! Thanks for sharing on Country Kids.

    1. I do hope they look back to our apple days fondly. Lovely idea that it will potentially involve another generation one day. Lots of apples for the freezer. Apple jelly too and pies and crumbles, dried apple… there is talk of an apple press to make some juice. One day! Maybe some apple cheese too this year. I do feel blessed!

  2. Wow, that is a lot of apples! How do you store them all? I’ve enjoyed using up our bagfuls from our apple picking – but I think I’d find that many a bit daunting 🙂 Lovely that it’s something that you all do together. #CountryKids

    1. There is a lot. Can’t give them away, as everyone else has a fabulous harvest this year. So lots of preparation in the next few weeks. Lots!!

  3. Fantastic! We used to have two apple trees in our garden when I was a child, an eating and a cooking apple tree. Harvest was always such fun, a really family affair with the boys and dad climbing up and throwing them down for us to catch in the blanket. Happy memories!

    1. What a lovely memory. Our best tree has knocked over by Great Danes when it was a few years old and never quite straightened out again. I daren’t let anyone climb it, so the long arm cropper is very useful. The angle has not stopped it producing a bumper crop almost every year. Plus, they taste fabulous!

    1. It is fun collecting the apples. The children love the fact that we are eating and preparing the apples that they helped harvest.

    1. Blackberries, unfortunately, have long since been eaten. I’m very fond of adding cinnamon, so I use alot at this time of year.

  4. That is such a great tradition, and it’s no wonder you look forward to it so much. And wow, that’s a lot of apples!

    1. It really is one of those days in the year that marks a change in the garden. Only had a small crateful last year, so it is lovely that this year was more noteable.

  5. Wow what an amazing crop of apples! Just incredible. Great you had some help too! I hope you’ll be having some crumble soon 🙂

    1. Plenty of pies, crumbles, baked apples…… Good job all the family love apple. Made a batch of apple muffins today and they disappeared quickly.

  6. Oh wow! I’m very envious of all those apples.I love making crumbles, cakes and chutney in the Autumn with apples.Popping over from Country Kids.

  7. These pictures remind me so much of autumn time with my grandparents. They had so many apple trees in their gardens and always lots of apples for apple juice. Delicious x
